Double majoring - Mannes & Eugene Lang?

I want to audition for Mannes on flute. I'm sort of on the fence when it comes to making a commitment to study music exclusively. If only doing music is the only way I can study music somewhere really good, I'm willing to do that for the sake of getting the best music education I can. But if I had the opportunity to study something non-music related at the same time, I'd be thrilled.
I've been looking into Eugene Lang, and based on some of their collegeboard stats, it looks like could be a pretty good match for me. Being able to double major across schools would awesome, but no matter how hard I try to fish my way around their website, I can't find any information about double majoring (Mannes talks about Mannes and Eugene Lang talks about Eugene Lang!)
Has anyone had any experiences with this? Does the school allow applicants to apply to two separate schools, or, if I ended up at Mannes, would I have a shot of declaring a second major or even minor at Eugene Lang later on?

At the time my S was applying to conservatory a few years ago, the New School offered a 5-year double degree option. Check into it; you could get a BM from Mannes or from the New School for jazz (which was where my S was applying) and also a BA from Eugene Lang. My S decided on a different conservatory, but I would be suprised if this is not an option for you.

Thanks for your reply! I looked at the website, but it seems to say that I could only double major if I was looking into the school of jazz, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I’ll probably call the school soon and get more specific details on it.

Also, do you know whether your S’s application to Eugene Lang affected the likelihood of getting into the music school? (or vice versa)

Yes, a call would be a good idea; and I should correct my previous statement to say that the double degree would have been a BA/BFA, not a BA/BM. As to your question about any impact applying for the double degree may have had on his admission, I don’t know that I can answer that except to say that applying for the dual degree was MY idea, not his, which had a lot to do with why he did not end up there. I would say his strength as an applicant was in his musical abilities, if that answers your question. Good luck in your search.

From my understanding, the program at Mannes does not allow for a double degree BM/BA with Eugene Lang, like the New School for Jazz/Contemp does. The option at Mannes is to be enrolled in Mannes and receive a BS in music, which is the BM curriculum with 30 extra humanities/science/liberal arts credits that you would get by taking classes at Eugene Lang. It is important to remember that the New School for Jazz and Mannes are two completely separate entities under the New School umbrella of schools.

Hope this helps!
