McGill Double Degree

Hey all, I'm sure these questions are a little tedious, but does anyone know anything about double degreeing at McGill?

Thanks,
David.

When we toured the Schulich School of Music at McGill last summer, we were told that it is possible to do a double degree. Seems to depend on what subjects/majors. My understanding is that if the majors are in different faculties (what we think of as colleges within the university) prospective students can apply to two faculties (e.g. Schulich School of Music and Faculty of Arts) at the same time. And the possibility of double degree starts with admission to both. From what our admissions rep told us, they work the details of process and requirements out with each student depending on circumstances. Our student tour guide (vocal performance) reinforced her comments anecdotally by observing that among his friends and acquaintances it was not uncommon.

Info on all this is not really too clear on the McGill website, but we found the admissions office to be helpful. There are a couple of McGill parents here on CC (not specifically music) who might have more info on double degree possibilities...do a search for McgillDad or check the McGill threads...

What were your impressions of the Schulich School?

D was really impressed by the music school facilities, especially the music library and performance spaces. She also has several friends from youth orchestra who selected McGill last year (we are in upstate NY so it's a great option to consider for musical kids in our area).

The new facility is pretty incredible: a $30 million investment that definitely makes a statement. It opened at the end of summer 05 (we visited summer 06) and was renamed for a major donor to the project as part of the opening celebration. From all accounts the various music programs at McGill are strong and there is some significant research going on, especially in an interdisciplinary program at the grad level. There are about 800 students in the music school, mostly undergraduates. They admitted 198 for the class of 2010, from an applicant pool of 1100. At the undergraduate level there are B.M. programs in performance, theory, history, music technology. Their orchestral and ensemble training programs are specially emphasized (my D's particular interest). A double degree program for music education is administered with the Faculty of Education, resulting in B.M. and B.Ed. A B.A. program in music is administered through the Faculty of Arts and does not have an “applied” (performance) component nor require an audition. Other double degree combinations with majors outside the music school are possible as well.

The music scene at McGill is varied and intense (more than 700 performances last year) and we heard from our guides that Polllack Hall on campus (the main auditorium) is the busiest concert hall in Montreal, which itself has an intense and thriving music and cultural scene. Overall, we were very favorably impressed by the Schulich School. My D wants a serious music program in a large school, urban, cosmopolitan setting, strong academics...McGill is certainly on her list.

This is the information on the McGill website about applying to both the Schulich School and Faculty of Arts. It looks as though you must matriculate initially into only one faculty, even if admitted into both.

"If you are interested in programs in two different faculties, e.g., Schulich School of Music and Faculty of Arts, you can apply to two program choices and, possibly, be accepted by both faculties. However, you can only confirm acceptance into one or the other. It is best to confirm the music program and then add the non-music program at a later date, subject to approval by the other faculty."

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are no regional auditions. If you don't go to Montreal for the audition, you must submit a DVD as well as a CD.

Hi,

Currently, applicants wishing to be considered for a double degree program at McGill and the Schulich School of Music must first complete a year in one faculty before making an application for a dual degree.

This allows for students to complete their first-year core curriculum before adding on additional coursework. The program overall is a 5-year program. It is also possible to take on an additional major within the B.Mus outside of the faculty, through special arrangement.

yes,you are accepted into one then do the other the 2nd year. We were up there this weekend. Admissions office was very helpful but we had to be very persistant in order to get someone to talk to. Ended up talking informally in a hall way and have followed up by email in both directions. The music school is AWESOME. We can only dream of acceptance.

so once you get accepted your 2nd year, is it a doable program (compared to others?)

yes- there are about 40+ ppl in the faculty completing two degrees (outside of the music ed combination)

Oh wow, that's a lot more than I expected

My D just got her audition time...midweek at 7:45 PM...plus you need to take a 2 hr theory exam which is only given twice a day - morning and early afternoon...bleh....does anyone know how receptive they are to switching times?

ABlestMom, if you don't mind me asking, what is your D's instrument, and did you find out her audition time via e-mail, postal mail, or by checking on Minerva? We're anxiously waiting to hear our D's audition time for clarinet.

Thanks.

Check Minerva; it was there first, then they sent an email a few days later. This is for piano.

juniorbill....my D got it via e-mail 5 am this morning. She's in vocal performance.

Hi,

All audition times have been posted on Minerva - which you can access with your applicant ID and PIN.

Changing your audition time may be possible - contact Admissions asap!

Thanks rideltrain! I've sent off the e-mail!

Hi,

I've applied to McGill but I haven't received my audition time. I am applying for clarinet... should I be worried? Other I know haven't gotten their times as well. Also, my reference sent the letter in December but on Minerva it says they received it late January.

BBlueB, same for my daughter, clarinet and no audition time on Minerva yet. Her reference letter didn't get there so we sent it via fax and FedEx, and they said it arrived Monday but doesn't show up on Minerva yet. Maybe they're way behind on scheduling clarinet.

Update - My D's clarinet audition time was posted today, so keep checking. (We still haven't received an e-mail from McGill about it.)

Would I be looked at the same if i auditioned via DVD/CD instead of a live audition. I live so very far away!
