Just wondering who on here has double majored....

My questions-

What majors did you choose ( and why)?

Is it worth it?

How hard is it? I mean you could essentially double major in related majors (such as chemistry and biochemistry [I don't know...I just chose them]) and they would be easier to do, right? I am planning pre-med and I feel like double majoring would be easier with taking so many science classes that cover so many majors.....correct me if I'm wrong though.

Thanks! :)

It depends on your university. Where I’m at, I believe only like 2 classes may overlap for both majors, nor can any of the classes for your major count towards the liberal arts requirement, though prerequisites of course would count. Some people still manage to double major though, but they probably planned it out as soon as they were freshman and didn’t have many “interest” classes to take. Sometimes an interest class will open you up to changing your major entirely… there are benefits to both.

I’m doubling in English and History. It’s going pretty easily so far, I’m actually planning on graduating early. Here’s what I’d suggest:

Know what you’re going to do from the beginning. If you try to do double chemistry + biology and then want to switch to physics + anatomy, you’re gonna have a bad time. I knew from day one that I wanted to be an English major so I didn’t “waste” any time taking classes that wouldn’t go towards either major. I decided on history later on but by that point, I was already halfway done with my English.

Take as many classes that overlap as possible. It’ll only help you in the long run. If you finish both majors and still have time, then you can go out of your way to take classes that interest you. But get the requirements done asap.

I definitely think it’s worth it! Now I get two (probably useless) degrees for the price and time of one.

As noted, it can be done. I would have probably done it but don’t have room for it because of uni requirements as noted and trying to figure out what the other major would actually be if anything. For instance, and I’m not sure of Reb’s school, The english degree requires 33 hours of English courses at the 300/400 level, 7 of them are required, and none may overlap with anything you did to fill liberal studies requirement. Then the honors seminars if you take them usually eat up other hours if you do honors in your major. So even though I have 5 other English courses on my transcript (2 pre reqs, 2 200 level, and a seminar) none of them count towards the major. Add in a 12 hour foreign language requirement as well and left with little room to work with. I could have probably pulled a double major in English / Philosophy, but since so many of the courses are “required” and you can’t just randomly select the ones you want, would be more difficult.

Thanks for all of the input! Some of this is really useful. Even though it’s a while 'til I get to college, I guess I better start looking more into this!
