Double Majoring

Will majoring in Computer Science(Software Engineering) and Civil Engineering difficult? Is it bearable? Are they closely related? Help, Please. I graduate high school in 2015, and I can't choose. I like both.

It will definitely be difficult depending on how much time you want to take, they aren’t all that related, and there really would be no benefit to your career.

If you aren’t certain which area you would prefer, apply to Universities that area strong in both programs. Begin college assuming that you will double major and choose your first-year classes accordingly. Once you’ve had more exposure to both areas, pick which one you like better to major in and drop the other one. There is not much of a career advantage to actually double major, and it would be very difficult to graduate on time with a double major. If you were going to spend extra time in college, career-wise a master’s degree would be a much better investment in time & money.

Double majoring simply because you like both subjects is not a smart decision. There is no reason to even further contemplate double majoring unless you can present a viable reason why majoring in both would benefit your future career.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a good reason to major in both software engineering and civil engineering.

What about majoring in civil engineer and minor in software??? It’s literally hard to choose.

What do you want to do day to day at your job? Do you want to design a bridge/ building, or manage construction, or do hydrology reports, or design roads for traffic, or design the foundation of a project, etc. Or do you want to design software/ websites (to be fair, my knowledge of what C.S. majors is very minor)?

Your best bet right now is to go to a school with good Civ. E and C.S. programs, take a few intro courses for both, then decide which you like best. Try talking to some Civ. Es and C.S. majors now, or once you get into school.

I don’t think the minor will do anything. Civil engineering jobs are not programming heavy at all. We just use the software and excel. And I don’t think you will get a C.S. job with only a minor.
