I'm thinking of double majoring in Cognitive Science and Philosophy. What is Yale's policy on double majors, or is the student at free will to pick and choose?

free to pick and choose. I think about 15-20% of graduates have a dbl major. I almost did it myself (Econ and History)

Yeah, the admissions officer told me that I would just have to fulfill the requirements for both as well as the core and I was good.

I'm considering English and Applied Math...

Obviously doing a double major increases work load and stress. But is it do-able? I guess if 15-20% of ppl do it then it is.

Some people advise against having a double major because it descreases your opportunities to explore other interesting courses. You can only have two overlapping courses, so you are essentially completing each major independently of the other and have to complete a entire different set of courses for each.

In the case of Cognitive Science and Philosophy, you might find that it is better to major in Cog Sci and take Philosophy courses to fufil the approved courses requirement, so that you have more options available to study other things. But you have a long time to decide either way

Double majors don't increase your work load/stress... they just limit the electives you can take.

Also, Yale College Council is working on getting minors. That's not a guarantee it will happen, but there's interest in getting minors instituted.

I think 30% of the student body does double majors; I personally am planning on one. =)

there may already be a major that encompasses both cognitive science and philosophy. yale has a lot of these.

One major i'm interested in is political science, economics, and ethics. If I do that, then I get to essentially quadruple major because I'm also going double major with Drama.

Another scenario: what if I double majored in Cognitive Science and Chemical Engineering? Would this be good or bad?

I read an article in the YDN about why Yale's double major rate is so low compared to most other schools that was really interesting...basically they say that people come in just like you guys/me...wanting to everything Yale offers/double major with a minor and study abroad and all sorts of crazy stuff, and then they calm down and figure out what they want to do. I wanted to do a Cog Sci/English double major, but I'm starting to realize I don't want to major in English even though I love english because it's really writing that I enjoy and not the analysis of literature- which is what an english major is. If I go to Yale, I'll probably just major in Cog Sci and take lots of writing class/do a lot of writing ec's.
