Double minor?

Is there anyone on here that is currently minoring in two things at USC? If I get in (1st choice Critical Studies, 2nd choice Narrative Studies), I'm interested in minoring in either Marketing or Consumer Behavior, or both. Is it practical to minor in two fields? I think they are pretty closely related, except that Marketing focuses more on Business and Consumer Behavior focuses more on the social sciences. There is some overlap but not a lot, and the requirements are classes I would like to take anyway.

How easy is it to double minor at USC?

Daughter is double minoring. It takes careful advance planning, but it can be done. In most minors, only one 4 unit course can also count for another minor or for your major, so most minors require at least 16 unique units. Your diversity course can double count as diversity and for your minor (and major). If you keep your grades WAY up, you might be eligible for the Academic Achievmenet Award, which allows you to take up to 20 units without extra charge if you need the units for multiple majors/minors.
A good way to plan it out is to draw up a grid of 8 semesters and start plugging in your classes - start with your GE (be sure one GE double counts for your major or a minor), then plug in your major requirements then your favorite minor. Finally, see if you can squeeze in that second minor. Another option is to just do one minor, but use any elective choices to tailor it to a custom-made Marketing-Consumer Behavior minor.

It is all in the planning - and you are very good at that!

YAY. Thanks alamemom. :)

See, originally I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do Advertising and Marketing… so I tailored Marketing a little bit to focus on Advertising too. But then I discovered Consumer Behavior. :P

I think I’ll be able to do it.

I’m planning on doing two minors, musical theatre and cinematic arts. :)

What’s your major?

It’s definitely possible! Make sure you plan with your advisor early on and ensure that things will fit. If you start planning your freshmen year, it will make things go much smoother.

I’m a BA Theatre. :)

If I recall correctly, you want to be a production major, right? That one is pretty demanding, my roommate is one. I think you can probably do one minor, but two might be difficult.

Nice memory! This time I’m applying for Critical Studies though, but I think it’s pretty hard to transfer into the SCA so if I do get into USC it will probably be for my 2nd choice, Narrative Studies.

Theatre + Musical Theatre + Cinematic Arts is a good combo though. I know that USC likes it when people major/minor in unrelated fields, so how exactly do they define “unrelated”? Are theatre and film be unrelated? Or is unrelated more along the lines of, for example, engineering and art or something? :P

sadly, I don’t think theatre and film are unrelated enough for me to get the Renaissance Scholar scholarship or whatever it is. :frowning: Even though each one is in a different school! (Theatre, Music, Cinematic Arts). But today I officially declared my CA minor! Yayyy! (that building/complex is SO confusing fwiw… SCA, SCB, SCX, and who even knows what else?!)

I honestly don’t know why you didn’t get in before, it’s completely ridiculous. But as I understand it, admittance isn’t as absurd for transfers, so I’m definitely rooting for you! :D

One of the girls in my acting class is trying to switch to a Narrative Studies major, I just found out today! But she was saying she’s apparently not allowed to minor in anything even remotely artsy? Neither she nor I understand it at all, but I guess she can’t take theatre or music or film or art classes beyond what her major requires? If someone could clear that up, PLEASE do, I don’t understand it at all. But for those two, I don’t know why you couldn’t do that.

wisdomsomehow - Thanks for all the info (and support). :D

I have a friend majoring in Narrative Studies who goes on here too, I’ll ask him about that.
