Double Waitlist Acceptances

My daughter has been waitlisted at both of her reaches. She’d be thrilled with either, but one is definitely her dream school. It’s obviously not likely she’d get into both; but if she did get into the first, would she be able to withdraw from that one if she eventually got into her top choice? That would be the second withdrawal - she would’ve withdrawn already from a target school to accept the first waitlist position. I appreciate any help.

Not sure I understand the question. You mean if she gets into Choice B, she’ll accept and still wait on Choice A? Then if she gets in to A, she’ll go back and decline B and accept A? I think this is a highly unlikely series of events, but I believe that would be fine…?

Yes, she can withdraw from 2 different schools if she is accepted off the waitlist, but you would be forfeiting the enrollment deposit and possibly a housing deposit from each school.

I think that’s OK. I think you are saying she’s going to deposit at her target school by May 1st and go on 2 waitlists - a first choice and a second choice. You want to know if you deposit at the second choice wait-list school, and later get into 1st choice waitlist school - is that a problem. As long as you don’t deposit at 2 schools at the same time (you should notify and decline the target school once depositing at the second choice) you are fine. Then if you get into 1st choice waitlist, pull out of 2nd choice school and forfeit your deposit. You’ll just lose a lot of deposit money…

@gradtutor Yes, “first” was probably a confusing word to use. She will have accepted her target. If she gets into her second-choice school, she would withdraw and accept that. But if she eventually got into her first choice, I want to be sure she could withdraw from her second choice as well. I realize it’s very unlikely. But basically, can you successively withdraw from schools if a preferred one comes through.

Thanks for your response.

She will have to deposit somewhere she has been accepted to (a target, as you mentioned), to make sure she has a college to attend in the fall.

Then if she accepts both waitlist spots…

If/when she gets off one and accepts the offer, she will have to renege on the target school enrollment, and will likely lose that deposit.

If/when gets off the second waitlist it’s the same process. Accept the new offer, renege on the other accepted offer. And will likely lose that deposit too.

Although many expect more waitlist action this year, if you applied for FA do check each of the reach school’s policies…some schools don’t offer any FA beyond loans to waitlist students. Full pay students have the greatest chances of coming off of most waitlists.

Good luck.

@Gumbymom @suzyQ7 @mwfan1921 It would definitely hurt to lose two deposits, but we’d do it for her dream school if we were lucky enough get the chance. Thank you all for being so helpful.
