I am so glad that I have come across this forum as I think asking questions here gets better answers than the Y! site..

I am an aspiring engineering major trying to figure out what is and what isn't in the field. I am taking the few pre-requisites that I have from a cc and I am hoping to transfer this coming fall semester to a university. The pre-requisites I am taking were fine, it is challenging and I am expecting to get hit by many more challenges once I transfer to a university and take my higher level courses. I thought that despite the challenges I was good and looking forward to the major until..

I took my Physics classes.. I had a D the first time I took it last fall. I was still determined to take down the class and hopefully do better when I retake it.. Spring semester is now passing and I am quite sure I would be getting the same grade I had the first time I took it.. Now I am looking to drop the class to save my GPA, and retake it during the summer. However I am not as enthusiastic as I was before, and I am now questioning myself if I could even make it through this major.. I am starting to have cold feet because of these consecutive failures in my Physics classes thinking that engineering may after all be not for me..I just wanted to know what your advice would be for a person like me. I observed in my Physics class that I am better in understanding the theories of Physics than trying to show the theories through calculations (setting up the problems). I am however faring well in my math classes, I just couldn't tie the two well when they try to come together. Now I'm not sure if I should retake Physics again or look into another major already.. I think you understand why I am this worried since Physics will play a major role in my future upper level classes.

Should I re-try, or give up?

Help? Please? Anyone?

I have yet to meet someone that put 100% effort into a class and still got a D. They might exist, I’ve never met one though.

If you can honestly say you gave it 100% and got back to back D’s, then yes, you are probably better off in another major.

What are you other grades and what classes have you taken?

I was in a similar situation when I took my very first physics class which was gen phys 1. I ended up dropping in order to save my gpa. I advice you to go to tutoring and get help. Do you go out of your way to actually go out and get help/tutoring? My professor also sucked dick and was on a learn by yourself basis. Now I have a great indian professor that teaches my lab also. GO TO TUTORING. I’m pretty sure your school should have a center.

If going to tutoring is included in the 100% honest criteria that I put my best effort in the class, then I’ll say I’m 80% honest. lol… I never went to my school’s tutoring center for that matter and that’s probably my mistake… I, however have a brother who is trying to help me out in Physics I whenever I need to with the condition that he also isn’t busy with his own school work. This is embarrassing to say, but my brother and I tackled the pre-requisites in engineering at the same time and he is ahead of me. He is the younger one, straight out of high school. I am the older one, switching to engineering from nursing. I failed Physics I the first time we took it and he passed it so I am behind.lol…

@Noleguy: I am almost done with the pre requisites I needed in order to transfer. Physics I and II are the only classes I need to take down. I got B in cal I, A in cal 2 and I’m looking at a B in my cal 3 class… Bs for both my Chemistry classes… B in tech writing… and some 2 other technical classes to pad my GPA in case I fail a major classes which I’m getting As…I’ll say my gpa dropped from a 3.5 to a 3.3 which I see is not good when I took the D from Physics I…if I transfer to a university I know I should expect being problematic in a lower GPA than what I am facing right now for the challenge, but for now I’m fretting over this kind of GPA because I need a good GPA to be able to transfer at least. :(

How the hell?..your brother was in the same physics class and he ended up passing? Did you guys not study together or what? I would’ve thought that having a brother would help especially in lab. Why did you end up dropping and not consider about getting help from your brother in the first place
