Doubts!!!

I was all for NYU! Still am mostly.. But i was reading the why are people so depressed in New York thread.... and it listed like 6 reasons.. and i read those and it bummed me out.. Its my dream..but im scared that ill like get in to drugs and like feel alone there.... Money's no problem for me...but i like crave social conact sometimes...and from what ive been reading.. alot of people agree its all alone there.. So please, tell me your views. Because now im doubting NYU! And if you people love it and want me to love it too, tell me. And if you hate it, tell me why too... basically, tell me everything there is to know about the enviornment! Please!

It is true that it is easier to feel lonely at NYU due to the lack of campus and large city. HOWEVER, it is also every easy to overcome that. Try out new clubs, get involved in dorm activities, keep your dorm door open and socialize with people, etc, etc. If you make the effort to be social and open, you’ll get the most out of NYU. =]

Honestly, it was pretty easy for me to make friends and I’m not even that outgoing of a person. NYU organizes a lot of social gatherings and groups for new students and you should definitely take advantage of them. Personally I find it even easier to stray away from drugs and getting wasted every other night just because of how much there is to do in NYC. Make a couple friends, visit the museums, go to the park, watch a movie or play, or just explore the city. Drugs and such are not subject only to NYU but all colleges, and whether or not you get into drugs depends on your own choices.

i’ll be straight with you. NYU is for a certain kind of college student, one who knows that they won’t miss the traditional campus life. if you want to be able to hang out with your friends on a quad or go to greek life parties, NYU is not for you.

the people on the other thread were saying that NYU can be depressing if people come to New York with unrealistic expectations. if you really think about what living in New York means, and you’re okay with giving up on having the college experience that mass media has dictated is the norm, then NYU might be the school for you.

and i agree with AoDay. drugs are on every campus, not just NYU, and neither NYC or NYU will make you turn to drugs.

yeah… i get what you guys are saying. But the thing is that I’m from Pakistan. I’m a Muslim. Not a die hard one like pray a lot. But im still true to my religion. And that means NO SEX NO DRUGS etc. So i was wondering how difficult or easy would it be to stay away from that ****. And post no. 2 really helped. I think he put a great argument forward. If you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll go the right way. Cuz yeah, drugs and sex is everywhere. Its our job to like stay away

sorry post no.3 by AoDay*

Well, you can hang with my D! (not that we’re going to be able to afford it if she gets in anyway…but it’s still her dream school). She’ll be right there with you “avoiding”. But…she already tells me she has to do that in high school. It’s EVERYWHERE. But avoidable. There are SO many clubs I can’t being to imagine anyone not finding things to do and people with whom to hang out.

I mean…how many schools across the U.S. have an Islamic Center!?
[Islamic Center at NYU](http://www.icnyu.org/)

Yes, there are a lot of ways to avoid sex and drugs and stay true to your religion. We have many multicultural clubs, and religious centers such as the Islamic Center. My roommates are Christian, and they stay involved with Christian clubs to be around people with similar principles while feeling comfortable.

I’ve lived in New York for 17 out of 18 years of my life, and let’s see… I drink because I like to and that was my choice, no one forced pot onto me but I chose to try and it and choose to smoke, I’ve never done coke because I’ve never wanted to. I’ve never done heroin because I don’t want to, I’ve never done ecstasy because I don’t think it’s safe enough. I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life because I do not want to. It would appear that I’ve been able to make my decisions based on what I want to do, and I bet that’s what you do wherever you’re from.

The city is not some big dark black hole of drugs and crime. Stop being such sally’s please. You determine what mistakes you make - no one is going to put a line of blow in front of you and force it up your nose - this is ridiculous.
