Hi, everyone! May I ask what the drug and alcohol scene is like at NYU? I don’t do drugs, and am worried I’ll be pressured into stuff (not that I’ll give in) or won’t find people, who don’t do drugs like me. Is it possible to find people who are similar? Is the whole drug scene very visible or quiet subtle unless you’re involved? Thank you!
update: don’t mean to seem judgmental. I’ve got both, friends, who drink and/or consume other substances, and friends, who don’t. This doesn’t make anyone better or worse, obviously.
I think it’s probably a matter of who you surround yourself with. One of the wonderful things about college-- especially one like NYU-- is that they attract and include a huge variety of types of people. You’ll find your people.
And I’m OK with you being “judgemental” about illegal drug use. You’re talking about the behavior, not condemning the people who choose to partake.
Maybe post this on the NYU board for school specific information. But, just in general, IMO, once in college, while drug use can be common, especially in certain circles, no one will be pressuring you to do drugs. If offered, just say no thanks. No one will judge you, and if they do, who cares. Like Bjkmom said, you will find your own people. And, the nice thing about going to school in a city is that there is a LOT to do if you are not into that school’s party scene.

We’re a big school in a big city. There are definitely drugs around. However, it’s not like a big scene–similar to how the party scene exists, but you have to seek it out. If you don’t want drugs (or alcohol even) you can stay as far away as you want. Nobody will pressure you into doing anything, and if they try to, leave and find better friends. Also, if you’d prefer to stay completely away, it’s very easy to find and make friends who don’t do drugs or drink or smoke in the first place.
edit to clarify that the “you” in this is general and also that I personally am a part of that scene at all and have still found friends and have an active social life!
There are people who do drugs and drink alcohol at NYU, like at any other college. However, you will certainly not be pressured into doing anything that you don’t want; I’ve found most students to be extremely understanding and supportive of other students who do not wish to participate in drinking, smoking, etc even if they themselves do.
