Downloading at Cal

Hey guys, I'm going to be a freshman next year and I was wondering how strict downloading music, movies, etc. is at Berkeley. I'd guess that using torrents would be a bad idea, but I wasn't thinking about using torrents in the first place.

So, would using direct download sites like MediaFire, RapidShare, and MegaUploads be safe? Also would converting Youtube videos into mp3's be safe as well? Lastly, does Berkeley have a bandwidth/download cap for students?

Thanks

If you stay in the dorms, bandwidth cap is 12gigs a week but there are ways around the bandwidth cap. Officially you’re not supposed to torrent/dl copyrighted material etc, but I’m not sure if it’s actually enforced.

I torrent and use direct download sites on a regular basis but I’ve never been caught. I would guess direct downloads are safer.

If you’re staying in the dorms, you should check out the Berkeley DC++ network. It’s a file sharing network only accessible through campus wifi or dorm internet connection where people share stuff. More info here:
