Downside to taking ACT in 9th grade?

Took act for Duke tip (30) and SAT for CTY program (1350 out of 1600) in 7th grade. Two year later i feel ready to take on math and science section in ACT. I am signed up to take ACT in april without the writing section. Should i add the writing section? Hoping to score at least 35 this time.

What is the point? Colleges don’t be impressed, and if you get a lower score than expected, some colleges will still require it to be reported. Just wait until junior year.

Math teacher encouraged me to take it. She thinks I have fairly good shot at perfect score. Honestly, I am more motivated about testing my knowledge in math and science section of a real test than impressing colleges.

Given you can delete ACT score, the student already got 30 while in 7th grade and the teacher encouraged the kid to take the test now, I do not see a downside (I think I have read that a few colleges may like to see more recent results). If it were me, I would take the writing and prepare for it, we have seen a number of posts where students regretted not taking the writing with a good score.

OTOH, there is a downside for not taking the ACT immediately after the appropriate Math course, as the student moves to higher level Math such as Calc BC, the student may forget the basic Math content for ACT and need time to review.

I don’t think a strategy aiming at a good superscore over time (good math score now, retake for good reading/English scores after a couple more years of HS) is a good idea. It seems like a waste of time & money. How about finding other math or STEM ECs to get involved with instead?

I have heard on this board of the ACT folks questioning and even canceling test scores if the student’s score improves over 6 points. This may not be true if you’re only a freshman but it’s something to consider.

And these students had proof of intensive ACt prep to prove they got their scores honestly but the ACT still cancelled the scores.

I don’t think the OP said he/she plans to superscore, the OP hopes to score 35 this time. I also doubt the OP would concern ACT questioning his/her improvement, the OP already got 30 as a 7th grader.

Thanks everyone for helpful comments, I don’t plan to superscore. I have gotten a 35 in reading and english section but scored a low grade in math and science two years ago. I feel ready for the task this time around. I took ACT and SAT in 7th grade for Duke tips and CTY at John Hopkins. Deciding if i should add the writing section this time around or take SAT with writing in 11th grade. I have already registered for april ACT without the writing portion.

I say go for it! Many of my peers finished their standardized testing by sophomore year, and it is a huge burden taken off your shoulders (especially since your classes will get harder later on). You seem like you want to take it (based on your responses to others on this thread). Just make sure you take a couple of practice tests to gauge where. you stand right now!

My kid took the SAT in middle school as part of the midwest’s TIP equivalent and had a score in the top 3 of 10,000 students her age. So I’m familiar with early testing. She still waited til junior year to do her “real” testing. With additional years of HS, you may have a better shot at a perfect score. It seems like it is your ego pushing you now — but colleges don’t care if you test early or not.

This just seems pointless.

Thanks for your advice; just curious, what was her score and what grade was she in?

She was in 8th grade. I’d rather not reveal her score (not sure why it matters).
