9th Grader ACT scores

Hi, I took the ACT for the first time in 9th grade and got a 28 composite. I really did work hard and I felt frustrated especially when I only got a 25 for writing. I am aiming for Ivy League schools and I understand I need 4-5 marks up to at least stand a chance. Is this score good for a 9th grader and what can I do to improve? Are there any tips to help boost a 28 to a 33? Thank you!

This score is fine for a 9th grader, but it really does not matter. The highest score you get in high school is the one that actually matters. There are plenty of guides to boost an ACT score, find them online or get a tutor. Best of luck

Great, thank you!

Apparently a 15 is considered average for 9th graders; A 28 is apparently at the 95%ile. This information is available on a web site that discusses the 28 explicitly. It is likely that you will improve naturally as you take more advanced classes. It is probably unnecessary for you to take loads of practice tests at this point. Your score suggests that you will have a high score by junior or senior year.

It is really not a good idea to keep taking the ACT before you are ready. Certain top schools such as Penn, Cornell and Stanford require you to submit all tests. Not sure why someone thought it was a good idea for you to take now. Have you finished Algebra 2, Trig and Geometry?

I believe there is a way to permanently delete a score but I am not sure what the rules are and I obviously would not do this until you have a higher score to replace it.

I agree with seeking Pam, please don’t keep taking the test. Study and do lots of practice tests, then retake in June of sophomore year if you insist on doing it early. Taking it a bunch of times means that you will have to submit lots of scores to some colleges, which doesn’t look great. Three times is really the most anyone should take the SAT or ACT. Despite super scoring, it’s always best to submit as few scores as possible, IMO.
