Hi, I find that my problem with the SAT math section is more with time management and silly mistakes than it is with lack of content knowledge (though that is occasionally a problem). I tend to score 670-700 without major practice, but I really want an 800. Which book would you recommend in my particular case?
Chung is junk.
Any reason specifically as to why that is? The dichotomy is because both books had amazing reviews everywhere.
In my never ending quest to get the best sat/psat prep for my kids I purchased both. Just thumbing through Chung I found that it had more difficult problems then would actually be on the SAT. PWN was very “cut to the quick” and just covered the material that would be on the test in a no nonsense but lighthearted way. I have since resold the Chung book but held on the PWN book even though my younger kids will be taking the new PSAT/SAT.
I didn’t buy Dr Chung because I didn’t want to prep for harder questions than necessary.
Wouldn’t you WANT harder questions to secure an 800?
No harder is a waste of time. SAT question is not for hard math question. One of my kid who is not good in math got 800 for Math. She is a humanities kid. Maybe for SAT subject test but not SAT.
My kids tend to be advanced in math and have issues with the easier problems because they tend to over think the easier problems and it’s been a while since they have dealt with easier math. Doing harder math would not help them get an 800. They need a review of easy math to score higher.
I just got Chung’s book today. Chung’s book show’s you shortcuts that could save you A LOT of time on level 3 and 4 questions. Another thing I like about the book is it goes STRAIGHT to the point! And I have previously seen most of the topic he covers on his book on a lot of my practice tests from the BB. I don’t really get where the complaint is coming from.
I kind of wish I had a bigger sample size then. Would you all at least say you liked pwn?
The red book was what my oldest child used for sampling. She went through those. This is a kid who almost got D+ in Honors Chemistry, not great in math. Then she used Princeton review book before she used the blue book. Of course she read all the Rocket review books and such. She is a natural reader and maybe that helped her, even for math section. Not a math kid.
The reason for not buying Chung was there was not enough time to go through the book and if it was not prepping to the same level as the real SAT then that was not helpful. I read here on all the comments back in 2006-2007 time frame and decided it was not worth it.
I personally don’t use those books, as the available explanations online at pwn, CC, algebra.com, and the book owners’ area are more than enough.
My son used PWN and his score increased 100 pts. He really worked his way through the whole book
@BeCambridge How much did your score increase with those resources?
I’m yet preparing, @StrikerX
One more thing. Chung has lots of errors which can really be confusing when trying to learn new concepts. Go for PWN.
Neither… I got PWN but never used it. Seemed like a great book (but wasted like $20 on it lol). I brought my SAT 1 math score up from a 680 to 780 in 2 months simply by taking practice tests and correcting my mistakes. Internalize and completely understand your mistakes and your score MUST RISE. They can’t test new material. I also got an 800 on SAT II Math II using the same method. Good luck!!
