Drake University ?

Can anyone tell me some info on drake?

Idk how much you already know...

but Drake is a private school in Des Moines, Iowa. A good academic school but it's no ivy for sure. I had a friend that went there and she absolutely loved it, she said it was a pretty natural setting while still being in a city. As far as I know it doesn't have a religious affiliation.

Hope this helps a little. Any specific questions?

I know most of the basic info, I was just wondering about the quality of their undergraduate academics, and the general locale and how that influences the life on the campus.

The quality of academics is a good mid-to upper mid range school. From what I know Des Moines isn't the most exciting city making the campus life a bit bland.

Guess I can't post links.

Drake is in a primarily residential neighborhood right on one of the major streets. There is good city bus service through the area, and shopping within walking distance. It is true that compared to some other cities, Des Moines enjoys a quieter lifestyle. That said, it is large enough to provide any services that you are looking for. Coming from St. Paul, you should find the weather a little bit warmer!

The primary local newspaper is the Des Moines Register DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register | Des Moines news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Des Moines, Iowa
you could check out what is happening in the city by reading a bit there.

It's a really small campus thats the one thing that stuck out when I visited. You can walk from one side to the other in about 5 minutes.

Is it easy or hard to fall through the cracks at DU? Does the faculty and staff make sure you are reaching your potential? Or is it "self serve" like a big U?

Atmosphere: Not much to do, or a lot to do?

Sports-oriented, or not? Good intramural programs, or not?

How's the workload, and expectations level?

Plus any other comments, of course.

I know a 2008 grad who got into a good behavioral neuroscience program with a full scholarship. Otherwise, the school is so-so and is in Des Moines. Enough said. Go if you get a great financial package.

An okay but not top student from my town has gone there and really thrived. He has had some awesome internships that turned into a year long post grad job. Now he is thinking medical school. It has been very good for him.

I live down the street from the Drake and there is a sizable amount of activity around campus. There is a busline on campus and the drake students integrate well into the neighborhood. However, Drake is not the best neighborhood, nothing too bad, believe me, this is still the middle of Iowa so it's nothing horrendous I assure you, but compared to other areas of Des Moines, it isn't the nicest. It's rather poor, I live in it, it's broke!
A lot of Iowan kids try to get in to Drake but it is mainly out of staters. Des Moines is trying to make itself more desirable to college kids and our downtown is actually starting to look like a downtown but be warned, Des Moines is dead after ten pm. We are the capital of Iowa and have an impressive capital building where our local legislators work and there are loads of internships. The law school is also very highly regarded in Iowa. Very! Athletics, okay, maybe you aren't familiar but Drake Relays? They are HUGE! Track stars from all over come to Des Moines and there are parties everywhere and Des Moines is so lively around that time. Basketball is also pretty big, I've been to a couple of games and the fans are dedicated. Year around, if you're from St. Paul, there is definitely more to do there but Des Moines does have a certain charm. I can't speak much on academics but admissions, I do know that it really seeks out out of staters and minorities.
