Drama & Theatre @ Columbia! :)

hi! :)
so i was just wondering what the drama and theatre arts major is like at columbia college.
i know it is combined with barnard, but as far as CC goes, what is it like for a student there (regarding courses, auditions, productions, internships, etc.)?
are there are students here majoring in that department?
basically, i know i want to do a double major in theatre and probably creative writing just so that i have a back-up plan if things wouldn't work out as planned....
i know both are fairly small programs at columbia, but are they reputable and pretty good?
i mean, obviously the school is in the city so internships on broadway shows and such would hopefully not be too hard to come by.... ;)

You know that there’s a Columbia College in Chicago, and a Columbia University in New York, right? If you major in theatre at Columbia University, you’ll be taking your classes at Barnard. So look at the Barnard theatre website. I’ve heard mixed reviews on the quality of the program, and have heard overall better things about NYU Tisch and Fordham. If you were talking about Columbia College in Chicago, that’s not tied to Barnard. CC in C is a non-audition BFA with relatively reputable theatre.

i’m talking about columbia university (since i mentioned barnard and nyc…)
and yes, i know the classes are at barnard and have been to their theatre website
however, i would like to hear from some people that maybe have past experience with the school or department in particular
and for columbia UNIVERSITY in NYC it is a non-audition BA in theatre…

Again, most of the theatre department is at Barnard. I’m visiting in April and sitting in on at least two classes, and I’ll be sure to let you know what I think. In the mean time, professors are really helpful and you could try emailing them specific questions.

The theater department for Columbia University undergrads is housed at Barnard. All classes between Columbia College and Barnard College are cross registered, so you should have no problem getting into any of the classes whether you are a Barnard student or a Columbia student. While I graduated from Barnard many years ago and was not a theater student, I do know that both Lauren Graham and Cynthia Nixon are Barnard grads and have managed to do quite nicely for themselves!

With respect to creative writing, Barnard is an amazing program (Mary Gordon is wonderful) and it would be very possible to double major if that was your goal. Additionally, the dance department is quite good.

Finally, the career development center (or whatever they call it these days!) is excellent in finding great internships.

I have a daughter who is a junior and while she is hopeful that she will be able to go the BFA route, Barnard is among her top BA choices.

Good luck in your search!

@mom24girls: mhm, actually i only applied to Columbia University, but am still considering doing the double major if i decide to matriculate there :] thanks for the help!

any other suggestions / ideas!? :)
