I posted this over on the Muhlenberg forum, but a nice CC member said I might try here too.

My DD just received a deferment letter from Muhlenberg. She applied ED, but not until close to the first of Feb. Did anyone else here get a deferment letter for this year? Has anyone here ever received a deferment after applying ED to Muhlenberg, but then later got in? Just curious about what the odds might be. I also suppose that even if she does get accepted, the merit or grant $ will not be very generous (assuming ED people get more?).

I can’t speak for Muhlenberg specifically but when an applicant is deferred in the ED round at a college, they still have a chance of admittance. Simply, they are now considered in the RD pool of applicants. Some will get in. Some won’t. I believe the acceptance rate in the RD round at Muhlenberg, however, is LOWER than in the ED round. This would not affect aid, however. I’ve never heard of aid being more in ED than in RD. If anything, a school has LESS incentive to offer a higher aid package in ED as ED is binding and the student must attend regardless of the aid package. So, the issue for your D is not really the aid here but simply that she is being considered in the RD round of applicants. The good news is that she is still in contention and was not rejected in the ED round!

I don’t know your d’s academic stats, but yes I know of 2 kids, one last year and one the year before who were admitted from the deferment list.

Both students knew of their acceptances by the end of March, interestingly enough. We knew of one boy who did not make it off the deferment list last year, and he was notified in mid-April I believe.

The 2 who were admitted had slightly higher stats than the boy who was declined admission.

Have you had her contact her Admissions rep? I’ve heard people say that it can help to contact them, let them know how much you still want to attend and give them any updated grades and/or recent accomplishments. Good luck to your daughter :)

I second realjoy’s suggestion to contact admissions. Does she have any new info to provide? Anything she did not think of sending when she originally applied?

Wow…thanks so much soozievt for your post! We were both worried since we know they admit far less people in RD. I guess it all comes down to her stats vs. others in the pool. She felt her audition was really strong and Mr. Richter really seemed to like her, so maybe that will help. I had read somewhere that the ED kids usually get more, but I guess that’s wrong. I guess you can tell this is all new to me Thanks again for you post.

mamalu - DD’s stats were good but not stellar. She has a 3.6 unweighted, several honors courses and 1 AP (her school doesn’t offer a lot), tons of volunteer work and leadership positions at school…BUT she really had a tough time with the SAT & ACT (1170/1720 and 25). She’s smart and knows the material, but is a ‘thinker’ and therefore not as fast as other testers. I’ve heard these tests test more on speed than knowledge. Anyway, I’m sure that is the biggest factor in her deferment.

realjoy & anothermom-w-q - thank you for the suggestions to contact admissions with additional grades and other info. I will definitely have her work on that. It can’t hurt, right? Thanks so much! very helpful :)
