Dress Code for College Visits?

OP - they aren’t going to single your son out. Nice jeans / sneakers, and a decent t-shirt / polo / sweater are the norm for 99% of the kids.

I actually did make an effort to wear stylish clothing / jewelry (not “mom jeans” and a sweatshirt), which caused me to feel slightly superior to the shabbily dressed moms, which was worth it :-).

On our trips, I packed 4 mini-umbrellas in my handbag, and naturally my family thought I was nuts, but boy were they glad when we had downpours at Tufts, Brandeis, Clark, Wellesley, Smith and Mt Holyoke.

I would go ahead and schedule an interview at Kenyon and Oberlin. (I’m not sure about U Chicago or Northwestern.) It is a good opportunity to ask questions and show interest. Senior year gets busy and you might not be able to get back everywhere. Even if he decides not to apply there, nothing lost.

i agree with scheduling interviews if possible! Senior year is soooo busy. We are having trouble finding times for second visits.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The Pearl Jam reference was a typically (for me) lame attempt at humor. Think loose-fitting jeans, a t-shirt, an unbuttoned plaid flannel shirt worn more-or-less as a jacket, and either checkerboard Vans or black high-top Converse Chuck Taylors. If/when grunge makes a comeback, he’s ready.

I think I’ll let him be comfortable on this trip and save the concern for any admission/scholarship interview that may come his way. Rain gear was a good catch–I’d have probably dropped that ball.

Too bad Superplex’s post disappeared. I had questions about that Brooks Brothers scholarship. ;-)

I’ve done two spring break college visit trip. Although easter is really really late this year be prepared for extremes in weather. The end of April is warm in Texas. Not so much in the midwest although it’s getting better by then.

We had days in the 70’s, rain and 40, freezing rain, snow and everything in between all in the same week. I’ve been to plenty of spring track meets huddled in blankets. As baseball mom’s say, never put away your long underwear until June. Also when you get a wind off one of the Lakes, it can get really cold. Ohio State and Michigan State are really big campuses, be prepared for a long walk, no matter the weather. We did an hour tour of Ohio State in subzero weather, only briefly going inside.

Any suggestions for accepted students day (grad school) for girl in cold climate (Michigan), aside from sensible shoes  She will be meeting with profs and advisors as well as other students. Thanks

^ Maybe a skirt and some opaque tights or leggings for warmth? Pants would be fine too (even jeans, but for an accepted students day at grad school I might dress up a bit. Go with nice, dark jeans or another kind of trouser pant).
