I am a junior in high school and finially looking at colleges (something I have sucessfully procrastinated on) and I found one that I really like. I am planning to attend an local information session, but I have a dilemma. What does one wear to an event such as this? Casual dress... or are we supposed to bump it up a bit? I guess I'm just asking what parents have observed from previous info sessions that they have attended with their children. Ah, I must say, being the oldest (and the guniea pig) of the family is not the most comforting thought.

I doubt what you wear to such a preliminary event would have any effect over your chances of being accepted... however just to play it safe and conservative I'd just wear a smart-casual attire. Khaki pants and a collard shirt (tucked in with a belt) and nice shoes if you're a guy, something on that level if you're a girl. That way you'll look presentable but are unlikely to appear over or under dressed.

At info sessions on the college campuses, themselves, 99.999% of prospective students were wearing their usual t-shirts with cargo shorts/cargo pants/jeans.

At my son's hs, where admissions reps came to hold info sessions just with students at his school (quality small public in the Northeast), kids were in whatever they usually wore to school (same as above).

If you follow rocketman's advice, but would feel uncomfortable if you ended up overdressed compared to the average, you might carry your usual sneakers or whatever and a t-shirt in the car; make a quick change if you like.

My son wore jeans with a nice shirt or with a decent t-shirt and a jacket. Pretty much what he wears to school. I really don't think they care what you wear to their information sessions. Step it up for personal interviews, though.

Thank you so much! I guess I was just looking for a general idea and all of you seem to agree that it's not that important and just to look presentable. Thank goodness there is agreement though.

Thanks, I think I'll just wear whatever I normally wear haha. Thanks!

While these sorts of information sessions have no significance regarding admissions decisions, I think it is always a good idea to present yourself in a professional manner. I would say do this if for nothing more than getting into a good habit. I would typically wear some nice slacks and a polo shirt. Sometimes I would throw on a sports coat over the polo depending on the color. Don't worry about it too much.

after sitting through info sessions for 3 kids at every possible type of school - wear anything from t-shirt and shorts to polo and khakis if that's what makes you comfortable. The only "what not to wear" - shirts with slogans that could be taken 2 ways.... you never know what will offend. Stick to something that you could explain to your grandma and not be embarrassed.
