Dress Code for Interview

Just kidding, of course, Denzera. Excuse the sarcasm. I just found the quote itself hilarious. I'm sure your dad is a qualified business type who knows what he's talking about.

I've seen plenty a "qualified business type" commit any number of fashion faux pas, such as the undershirt thing, wearing a button-down shirt with a suit, wearing cuffs on tuxedo trousers, leaving open suit sleeve buttons to show off working button holes, etc. A "qualified business type" doesn't have to be GQ and know every rule of fashion; he just can't look like like a total slob.

^
Settle down big guy. This whole thread is borderline ridiculous.

^^ I agree.l

Which a-hole resurrected it?

i think this thread also proves that the undershirt issue is highly subjective. LET IT GO.

kill this thread PLEASE
although im curious if c2002 wront it on like a notepad couple months ago to make sure to check back on this thread to hear back from Denzera...

No, it proved that there are a lot of people out there who are uninformed, in the same way a lot of people believe that lots of other myths that are simply wrong. It'd be one thing if we took 100 fashion critics and got 50 people saying that it's okay to have a visible undershirt -- but here, we don't have a single person/source with credible expertise to demonstrate as much.

No, I searched for 'undershirt.'

"we don't have a single person/source with credible expertise to demonstrate as much."

which proves my point.

"As much" refers to "that it's okay to have a visible undershirt." You go to Columbia; you're smarter than this.

Oh my freaking-God dude. Could it be that it's a completely subjective topic?

It's like me saying "Nirvana is a crappy band!", but then you say "Nirvana is awesome!". It doesn't matter how many musical experts you get that say otherwise, I'm still going to think Nirvana sucks.

Similarly, some people think wearing an undershirt is essential, others do not. It really doesn't matter if 50 fashion experts agree or disagree with your position! Chances are, a fashion expert isn't going to be interviewing you.

When it comes down to it, the only thing that matters is the subjective opinion of the person interviewing you. Obviously, if Denzera is the one interviewing you, you're screwed. You should have made that undershirt more visible (then again, maybe he'll forgive your faux paux because it has NOTHING to do with your credentials).

Sine both you and Denzera, presumably, attend Columbia and -as we say around these parts- you're both "wicked smaht", there's a good chance both of you might be in a position to interview someone else. So congratulations on your ability to have an opinion on an issue that might actually have an impact on someone else.

As for right now, it really doesn't matter and this whole conversation seems beneath your caliber. You said to someone else "You go to Columbia; you're smarter than this". Listen, I'm glad that you were smart enough to get into Columbia, but having the ability to argue about anything and everything is not that impressive. You lack tact, my friend, and you need to seriously analyze your rhetoric because if you're actually trying to be persuasive, you're failing miserably.

No, I searched for 'undershirt.'

i think this answers the spirit of the question in the affirmative, i.e., C02's thought process was roughly "hey, wait, I need to go pick a fight with Denzera, what's a good fight I could pick, OH YEAH that undershirt thing from 5 months ago".

i think i'll leave the substantive question in this thread as it stands. some things aren't worth arguing about for months on end, and this is one of them.

Regardless of location, you should always dress sharp. Slacks, l/s shirt, dress shoes, and a sweater vest (business casual).

^Oh yeah. Never forget the sweater vest. And make sure it's argyle.

oh em gee, is this thread not dead yet?

In some parts of the country an exposed white undershirt may suggest a particular religious affiliation. :)

Just keep it classy and you'll be alright! There, problem solved. lol maybe?

Oh man, I love this thread.

Anyway, would classy jeans (raw A.P.C. New Cures, for any denim heads out there), brown wingtips, a white shirt, and a dark sweater work for interviews? I think I could pull off the jeans pretty well.

If your good-looking, otherwise I'd stay conservative. You don't want to come off too nonchalant.

apcs are previous levellll.

^^I see. I'm not exactly sculpted like Michelangelo's David or anything, but I stay very fit. And for a straight dude, I'm pretty into fashion. If I'm confident that I could pull off jeans without looking nonchalant (but rather just kind of fashion-forward), would they work? The particular jeans in question are very dark and slim-fitting, not like the baggy sort of jeans you'd rake leave in.

^^I dunno. They're not really cutting edge any more, but they're classic enough that they'd never really go out of style. Anyway, they're the cheapest "good denim" out there.

I'm thinking about copping a pair of Imperials, KMW's, or Flat Heads once the New Cure are worn out.

What denim do you wear, just out of interest?

Oh, and do you post at sufu or styleforum at all? You remind me of some people there...

i post occasionally on sufu. not really though. more of a lurker. i'm not really wearing anything right now. i have uniforms at school so khakis all week and sweat pants on weekends cause i'm mad lazy. i'll probably pick up a pair of diors and somets next time i hit up nyc.
