Dressing Young (Part 2)

I’m not a flowy, poofy style person myself. I’m more into classic and fitted styles. Only did poofy and flowy when pregnant eons ago.

I can’t do flowy and poofy either. I look like what I am…a fat lady drowning in too much material.

I’ve seen flowy and poofy carried over very elegantly by others but it’s like ruffles, just not me.

I can do flowly on the top but I have to pair it with skinny jeans or leggings.
I wore my Anthropologie tiered dress last week. I love it and FYI I found it plenty long enough. It hit at my knee. I’d actually have liked it a few inches shorter. It’s a comfortable dress but definitely not something that shows off your figure.

Wow! Bumping this up from 10 months ago, how time flys!

I have a bit of a dilemma.

I ordered a few items from athleta. One of the items I had the wrong shirt shipped to me. The plastic bag had the item I ordered but the shirt was wrong. I did a chat and they told me to just mark that I received the wrong shirt and it would be fine. I live 100 miles away from a store and wasn’t going to be in that area so I did the return in the mail. I also returned another item in that order.

I received a return confirmation but it didn’t include the item that wasn’t correct but the other items were returned. I waited a day to see if they would update but it did not.

I sent an email to the address that they said to ask questions and it was sent back and said that I sent to an unanswerable email. I initiated chat and was told that I needed to wait until the 26th for it to be returned. I said that the other items were returned but all I got was wait.

I’m really not sure how to proceed? Do I continue to wait even though the other items are credited to my account. Usually athleta customer service is really good but I’m a bit annoyed.

How frustrating, @deb922. They said to wait until the 26th. Have you reached out again? I received a size different from what I ordered from Banana Republic which was really surprising. They (gap corp) may have lots of new hires or a shortage of staff, resulting in less than stellar CS.

I’m glad you resurrected the thread as I have a question. When I wear a dress, most often to a party or special occasion, I struggle with what to wear over it. I’m petite, barely over 5’2" but well endowed with a high waist. What I imagine would work best would be an unstructured, short/cropped shrug. I strongly prefer long sleeves to 3/4. Also, most of my dresses have some type of V or dip in the neckline which also impacts what type of cover up will look good. I’ve yet to really find something that works and generally fall back to a shawl but I’d love to find a sweater or jacket. I could use this type of cover up for several dresses but my current need is to pair with a white background floral sheath with many colors, pinks, red and green being most prominent, for a wedding over Memorial Day weekend. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks @collage1. I reached out to another customer service rep and they got my account credited for the correct amount. They were confused as to why it wasn’t returned but everything worked out in the end.

I also received the wrong item from Talbots. This time I went into the store to return it. Again, the manager was confused about how to return and wanted to give me a merchandise credit. I refused because honestly it was their mistake. But again the system had to be overridden.

Seems like a common mistake that is difficult to remedy.

I have a couple of shrugs to wear instead of shawls. They feel more comfortable to me. They sell basic shrugs at Talbots

@collage1 I’ve been trying to find a tie front short cardigan sweater that I think would be a flattering style for this situation. I’ll keep looking, but here is one in the style I have in mind:

@collage1 This is a different style, but also might look nice:

@soozievt you are a wonderful personal shopper! You always find good suggestions! Those sweaters are nice.

I might be coming to you in the near future as my D just got engaged last month. Once I know the venue, I’ll start shopping. The only thing I do know is she is getting married in San Diego, most likely next summer. I just don’t know yet how fancy she is planning, but knowing her, it won’t be formal.

@collage1

This cardigan tied at waist (sorry 3/4 sleeve though):

@4kids4us - congratulations to your D. San Diego has some beautiful places to get married, but I know that since the pandemic occurred many places are now booked up for the next year. D2’s good friend is looking for a formal place to get married next summer with 250 people and is not having much luck and is talking about moving the wedding to 2024.

I’m going to be a contrarian and suggest a long cardigan-like cover or duster. Like this one:

Or something like this:

The problem with short cardigans for me is that they emphasize the boobs too much (and I hate that!) and cut the body in two uneven pieces.

More of longer options:

@showmom858 she does not want a big wedding at all. And since we are from the East Coast, it makes it easier on us to limit the guest list. I think at most it will be 75, but if she is unable to find something to accommodate that, they are not in a rush. She actually preferred a fall wedding but with two of her siblings in college, one of whom hopes to be studying in UK for college, I told her she needs to have a summer wedding since our entire family must travel to get there. So it might be the following summer if necessary.

BTW, if you know any venues for a wedding this size, feel free to PM me please! She is only at the very beginning of looking and not planning anything formal (but not super casual, barefoot on beach either ).

I wore a printed chifton duster over solid knee length dress for wedding I officiated and attended last night. D approved and helped me choose among my various dresses and dusters and other wraps.

Personally I don’t like things that are short and cut up my torso. I also think they draw too much attention to my bust, a la Hooters. I think longer things are more flattering and help streamline my silhouette better.

Wonderful suggestions, thank you! I see a couple options that might work. The very unstructured one from Soft Surroundings is one of them. I’m not familiar with the brand/store but googled it and there’s a store about an hour from me but I’ll be in that area next week so I’ll stop by. The wonders of CC!

Also, I like a long sweater with jeans and pants but haven’t yet found one that works with dresses. The Nic and Zoe one from Nordstrom would have been interesting to try with my sheath dress but it doesn’t happen to come in a color that works for my current need.

I have ordered multiple shrugs similar to this link above: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/hobbs-london-ella-cropped-cardigan?ID=3862588&CategoryID=2910

Maybe it’s just me but see how it doesn’t lay nicely across the bust? My bust is larger than the model’s and so I don’t think I can have anything that’s a thicker material. I think a fabric like the one from Soft Surroundings and the Nic and Zoe are likely to work better. Having said that, since Bloomingdale’s approved it, it could be one of those things where we’re our own worst critic and see things others do not.

@collage1 - I’ve found Express works best for my body type - I don’t like baggy stuff and they have some really cute 3/4 length sleeve cardigans that are dressy and fitted. I have about 5 cardigans and I always return to the little Express one when I want to have something over a dressy outfit. I wore it recently over a v-necked red jumpsuit.

I don’t know that they are in stores any more but saw on Poshmark

@collage1 I have ordered several times from Soft Surroundings, including a few days ago and have had luck with them. Never been to an actual store.
