Drew and Madison

My son has just applied as an international student. What is Drew like for international students, and what is Madison like?

Madison is a typical suburban American town. Mostly affluent single family homes. The Drew Campus is lovely and about a 10 minute walk from Madison downtown area. In the downtown area there are banks, coffee shop, bagel shop, movie theater, upscale restaurants some stores. There is also the train station which take you to NYC (45 Minutes) in one direction or 3 miles in the other direction to Morristown which has more stores, restaurants, theaters.

Farther east on Main street in Madison (But a longgggg walk) there is a Staples, Bowling Alley, Starbucks, Five Guys Burgers and Burger King.
In recent years the Madison merchants have really “put out the red carpet” for Drew students, running tours of the downtown area for new students and offering special discounts . I can’t comment on being an international Drew Student, but I know many international families move in and out of Madison because of their work and usually make good friendships with the people here.

One of the great things about Drew is its commitment to diversity on campus. My D has friends who, while not all technically “international students,” are originally from Nigeria, China, Kenya, Pakistan, India, etc. NYC, with its amazing cultural diversity, is only a train ride away. And, as I’ve posted elsewhere, there is strong support for making international travel part of the college experience, beginning with the Drew International Seminar (DIS) sophomore year. There is also an opportunity for students to do a semester at the UN.
