Drexel and Debt?

I want to major in Entertainment and Arts Management at Drexel. It is my perfect major, and Drexel is my dream education. My debt will amount to 40,000 if I commute. Is 40,000 to much debt? or is this reasonable for a drexel education (which includes the great co-op program)

You had better calculate what it costs, very generously , to commute to Drexel. Unless you live very near by, or have someone dropping you off and picking you up each day, it can be very expensive to commute into Philly. You need to have a car, mainitain it, insure it, pay for gas for it, park it. You need to eat while you are at the University. Your tuition, fees and supplies remain the same. It adds up.

My SIL’s nephew was accepted there and the family went through a lot of scenarios as to how they could afford it because like you, he wants to go there. His mom even tried to get a job there. But the bottom line is that it is too expensive. He also got into Penn STate and with Stafford loans alone, which will mean he will be about $26K in debt in principle alone, really close to $30K with the accrued interest, it’s doable.

So add up what your commuting expenses really will be. Understand that your loans will accrue interest over the years, and that you can only take out $26K in your own name. Talk to your parents as to how much they will truly be able to contribute. Yes, they can offer you the roof over your head, and if you are disciplined enough to pack a lunch and snack each day and eat breakfast at home, and pay for your car insurance and be your back up ride when the car is in the shop (and it will be in the shop at times, at the worst times), but how much monetary leeway do they have?

Is $40K too much debt, you are asking. For some kids and families, no it is not. The $100K may not be too much debt for some families. But how about your family? How are they with money and debt? How much would they be able to cover for you if things are tough and you can’t make payments? Can they co sign and have any of this on their credit report? How much are you putting them out? It’s not all about you, you know.

Obviously I dont know you and your situation but as a Freshman Drexel requires that you live on campus in the dorms your first year and unless you a good reason you will not be able to commute. I know a few people who got out of it but they had to make up a really good excuse for it. So I dont know you and cant judge from this post whether or not you’ve worked that out with them but that is the policy. Honestly if EAM is the right choice for you the debt does not matter. Dont let $40,000 stop you from going here because I know most students have a much higher debt than that when they leave school.

BUT, I am a Senior in the EAM program and have created a Facebook page for the major as my Senior Project and I encourage you to like it on Facebook and you can message me and all the advisers and teachers of the major to get more info on Drexel debt and the EAM program. I’ve put the link below. please like it if you have the chance I feel it will really help with your decision.
