Drexel tution rates

I am thinking to apply to Drexel for Spring 2018. I just love Philly. I checked fees for Drexel and it was almost around $87k a year. The tuition alone was $17000 each quarter. Is Drexel really so expensive? The tuition seems way too much to me. Is it an exaggerated amount? If so, how do they charge each quarter? Is the tuition fee based on credit hours taken? I read somewhere that they charge $1024 for each credit hour taken?

@stenykriz Go back and relook that up. I just checked under the full time undergraduate overview fee schedule for 2017-2018 and it was approximately $67,000. This was from the annual cost fee schedule

my D is in her 3rd year at Drexel. Yes, tuition alone is about $17K per quarter. However, you do not pay tuition while you are on co-op, BUT you do pay a fee (appx $800 per quarter) which allows you to take one class and able to use campus facilities and resources as a student.

Depending on your specific major, you can do 3 co-op cycles, or just do one co-op cycle. Most go with the 3 cycles. When you do the 3 cycle, your first year, and your 5th year you go to class for 3 quarters. Your second, third and fourth year you will be in class for 2 quarters and then you will work on co-op for 2 quarters. some coops are paid

If you are coming in as a freshman, you are required to stay in Drexel dorms. Sophomores are also requried to stay on campus. (you will need to pay for housing)…Unless you live within 10 miles of campus, i believe you are not required to live in housing.

also, if you enroll as a full time student, you will be charged a flat fee per quarter. You will need to take credits between the specified min and max to be considered a full time student (somewhere between 12-19 credits. that’s just a guess, you will have to check with Drexel for the exact numbers)

Drexel is crazy pricey! That said, they do offer a ton of opportunity. A motivated student will get their money’s worth.

i’m expecting my son to be accepted EA but not offered enough FA to even consider going. From all i’ve read in my research his 4.0 UW 32 ACT and our EFC of 10K will leave us at about 35K out of pocket per year. Yes it’s a good school but it’s not a good value

@JerseyParents depending upon his intended major and school, you may get more aid. They will also toss you some “little bones”. For example, my daughter gets an extra $2k per year because her dad is a navy vet. I wouldn’t give up yet. I’m very very happy with my daughter’s progress at Drexel. As far urban Us go, cost of living in philly for students is less than NYU, USC and philly is much more manageable city. First year he’ll be locked into a dorm and a meal plan. After the first year, there are ways to economize for living expenses. Best of luck.

Thanks for the encouragement @momneeds2no I’m an army vet - I’ll take that 2K

So he got in and I was Wrong. Drexel offered a lot - $21,000 Dean’s scholarship 18K Grant 4K Portfolio scholarship

$43K total puts us around 27K out of pocket without factoring in any potential loans Better than the 35K per year I thought.

@mommabear67 As experienced parent can you help with this question. Was your daughter getting any scholarship as coming freshman and was she getting them following years too? My son just got admitted into engineering, trying to see how much it will cost us, he got Founder’s Scholarship and Drexel Grant. Thanks!

@talarina my D did get both a scholarship and grant money. Her scholarship is the same for all quarters that she is in class (not for co-op terms) as long as she keeps a minimum gpa. The grant money changes a bit from quarter to quarter, but nothing too significant.

@mommabear67 You state that the grant money changes. My son in a JR in HS and next year when he applies our EFC will be at it’s lowest since I will have three in college. His sophomore year he will be the only one in college. I was told that the package they give you will remain the same for every quarter they attend (not for co-op terms). How do they change the grant money? This is the part that I’m afraid would change and make Drexel out of our reach. We are upper middle class and have saved for college, but not enough to cover four years (costs have sky rocked and no-one can save 200,000 per child). Both parents work and we have good equity in our home. Our EFC with two in this past year was $24000. Feel our EFC next year will be around $16000.
