I really LOVE Hamilton College. But i must know. I hear a lot about how all the students are depressed and drink a lot. how true is this? Is it fun to be at Hamilton if you don't drink much? What if you don't drink at all? How do students spend their free time in general? Thanks.

Hey,

As a current freshman at Hamilton, I can assure you that you can and you will have fun even if you will never drink. The reasons:
- You are NOT alone! We just have had a survey about drinking, and the result was that one third of the student population (some 600 students) do not drink at all, or only once in a month.
- There is always something to do, whether you drink or not.
- Hamilton is dedicated to organizing evening events in the weekends called Late Night Programs. These substance-free programs are designed especially for those who want to have fun without consuming alcohol. And believe it or not, they are in fact lots of fun. There are concerts, casino nights, trivia nights, trips to NYC to watch a Broadway play, etc.
- You can go to a party and have fun even without drinking. Would you like to just dance or socialize? Go ahead. How can you do that? First, not everyone is totally drunk at parties, there are many people out there who stop after a beer and enjoy the rest of the party. Second, and this is what impressed me about Hamilton, that college IS NOT like high school. People do not care at all whether you drink or not. If you go to a party and decide not to drink, nobody is gonna tell you to change your mind. Nobody is gonna judge you and nobody is gonna think that you are not cool; instead people will just accept your decision. This is true for most of the parties at Hamilton. Of course, there might be exceptions as there are jerks everywhere, but it would not be easy to find.

So drinking will, by no means, be a problem for you if you decide not to drink. You can go to college without drinking-I have many friends like that. Don’t worry.

As a current sophomore, I agree completely with everything said by ksanyee.

It’s true that it gets depressing when the winter comes along, but that doesn’t mean the students themselves do. It’s true - many students here drink a lot, especially when it gets colder - but this isn’t the case with everyone at all, not even the majority.

If you choose to live in a sub-free dorm your freshman year, you will find it’s very easy to find other friends who decide not to drink and you guys will have a lot of fun doing non-alcoholic things (movie nights, board games, Late Nights, etc.).
