Alcohol is celebrated in our society, walk into any nice restauraunt, and there is a big bar area, with prominantly displayed bottles of every type, in almost a shrine. Dozens of beer taps also. Huge wine lists. Walk into any professional sporting event and beer is everywhere. Walk into any barbeque or neigborhood party, and drinks are everywhere. I like an occasional drink, but dont need to be surrounded by it.

Its no wonder college kids feel drinking is and acceptable and expected part of college life. One of the “skills” needed for real life.

Some historical perspective: When I was in high school (when I did drink) I only drank Boones Farm Apple wine or Sangria because I couldn’t stand the taste of beer. I had to learn to drink beer (Thank you Michigan State). Now I drink only lots of beer and a little wine. Before entering my high school graduation party I chugged most of a 5th of vodka (because I couldn’t bring it in to the party) which made me sick. Haven’t had any vodka since. And that was high school, 40+ years ago.

It’s likely that UG at Michigan State are now learning how to chug handles, not beer if my experiences at OU and Oxford/Emory are any indication.
