To start off with a disclaimer, I'm sorry if this is blatantly obvious and I'm just naive.

How does drivers ed work at boarding schools? Students come from around the country, and each state has their own system. Do students just get their license after graduation?

Will the actual schools help with arranging that or are students on their own? I live in the Midwest but I’ll be going to school in New Hampshire, so it will be difficult to take class or get hours behind the wheel.

As described above. Also, some schools partner with a local drivers ed company to offer classes as part of the week-end program, which is fine if the student is in-state. OOS students need to check with their local DMV on reciprocity. The actual testing for permit and license is done in their home state.

As few schools allow boarders to have cars, there is not quite the sense of urgency to get a licence as you would see at the local HS.

@omgjusttellme I sent you a PM as cc won’t let me post a link.

@skieurope can you PM me the link too?

My kids’ school offers driver’s ed classes on campus on Saturday mornings through a local driver’s ed school. For on-the-road driving lessons, the driver’s ed school picks up and drops off the students. I’m not sure of the details for OOS students, but I know of OOS students who have taken the classes.

@needtoboard. Done. To anyone else, the link is specific to the school these two will be attending. Check websites for your school to see what, if anything, is offered for drivers ed.

@needtoboard and @omgjusttellme You’re both going to Exeter, right? There’s a section on drivers’ ed in the E-Book which is available online.

When I was in boarding school. driver’s ed was offered each term BUT you had to give up your sport for that season. Since boarders were not allowed cars (or driving for that matter), I never saw the point in giving up one of my sports. There’s plenty of time to learn to drive later – or in summer. For a boarding student, it just isn’t that important.

thanks everyone. I realize that a drivers license is not really necessary at a boarding school, but it will be weird going back on vacations and the rest of my friends are able to drive. ^#(^

That would be weird. This has been a concern, but my over-protective parents ( ) won’t even let me drive until 18, so…
