I dropped Mandarin in my freshman year because it was difficult for me to adjust from my public middle school to a college prep high school. The work load that I signed up for was higher than what I could handle at the time, so I dropped the class. I'm now a junior and I am thinking about colleges. I am in Spanish 2 and I am planning to take Spanish 3 as a senior. I have decent grades, I do a lot of extra curricular activities, and I'm planning to get around a 33 or 34 on the ACT. Did dropping Mandarin in my freshman year hurt my chances for selective colleges?

Not at all. Many colleges recommend (not require) a certain level of language achievement, usually around 3 years, but none of them say that you have to take it starting in freshman year. As long as you continue with Spanish, you’re fine. Just make sure you take the SAT II in that language so that you can test out of a language requirement should you end up at a college that requires it.

It would only be an issue at colleges that require or recommend completion of level 4 of a foreign language (either for admission, or for fulfilling graduation requirements).

Thanks! Would it still not matter even if I have a W on my transcript for freshman year? And I haven’t even thought about taking the SAT II test for Spanish yet, but that’s a good idea!

How does your school incorporate it into your GPA? If it’s not included, then don’t worry about it. Also, many schools that don’t weigh 9th grade grades very heavily or at all, so this just isn’t worth losing sleep over.

i
m new to this website and dont really know how to use it , lol but i just wanted to know if i can still apply to west virginia university even though i dont have 2 credits in a foreign language and thats a requirement , i
m a senior in high school so i cant take two language classes so would be application be denied since i do not meet those requirements?
