Dropping AP tests?

Hey there. I got into UCSD, and i’m taking four ap tests [and doing the whole full IB thing] within these next two weeks.

Of those AP tests, I really want to drop the AP French Literature test because I don’t feel as if I’m good enough at french to pass. I was wondering if dropping the test would affect my admission standing at UCSD. I’m not dropping the class, but just the AP test.

thanks for your help.

I called about potentially dropping AP Stats and they said it's not a problem at all....

But I'd call regardless...

Agreed. You can never be too safe.

you paid for the test; they only refund a little amount back. just take it and fail. who knows, you might pass?

and no ap test will have no bearing on your admissions status. i told put 5 ap's 'planned' and is only taking 3. i mailed them and they said it's okay: "AP Exams have no affect on your admission status."

My D's large public high school has a very nasty rule: if you don't take the AP test the AP designation is wiped off your transcript and it will show as a non-AP class, no matter what your grade in the class. Check with your HS and make sure they don't require you to take the official AP test in order to receive credit for an AP class.

^ I think that is referring to a school that actually pays for your AP tests....

If you are required to pay for your exam I wouldn't count on there being that kind of policy...

I would just take the test and fail if i were you, but they will probably not care so long as you let them know. They didnt care a month ago when i said that i was dropping two AP classes and not taking the test for either! your fine

For all I know my D's school is unique in this ridiculous policy, but I am just suggesting that anyone wanting to drop the AP test check w/their HS first to make sure they retain the AP designation. And as for paying, the students at this school pay approx $90 per test. They maintain that the reason they make the designation contingent upon taking the test is that the test results are a way for the school to monitor the teachers and hold them to a standard--i.e. teaching to the test. Personally I would much prefer to see honors or advanced classes rather than AP. Teaching to the test does not usually mean more depth; often it means more reading and less time to interpret the reading or more busywork.
