Dropping Calculus

So I’m a senior & I’m having trouble with AP Calculus BC. It is a flipped classroom so we watch the lectures at home & do the homework in class. I have trouble forcing myself to watch a 40-60 minute lecture at home everyday & keep falling behind. I feel like even if I pass the class I won’t receive any AP credit & even if I somehow do I’d be better off not using it since I’ll have to take Calculus 1,2, & 3 in college because of my major. So should I stay in the class or just drop out of it. I’ve already been accepted into the college I want to attend so that doesn’t really affect my decision. Thank you in advance for any advice!

I think you should stay in the class, just for the sake of being prepared better for your future Calc classes. You never know, just put in a little bit of hard work and determination and you might even receive AP credit; that’ll save you time in college by clearing out cal 1 and 2

If you have been accepted into the college you want to attend, you better check with them before you drop the class. Colleges do not like “bait and switch” games, and you could find your acceptance revoked upon their receipt of your final transcript.

My daughter is a college freshman now in a STEM major. College calc is TOUGH! It will be even tougher without the foundation of calc in high school first. The AP test credits don’t matter a hill of beans, it’s the exposure.

Set up a set time of day where you watch your lectures and have an accountability buddy to make sure you are doing it. IMO, this is a good exercise for getting ready for college next year too. You will need a lot of internal motivation to be successful. Best to practice now.

My daughter usually watched those videos on double speed and only slowed down when needed. Maybe try that? She could understand everything she was hearing, it just sounded like Alvin of the Chipmunks. (Her teacher actually suggested this method).

Could you switch to Calc AB if that is taught in a format that works better for you?

  1. If you drop out of a course like Calc BC after admittance, they can rescind your admittance.

  2. Get an accountability partner…so maybe find someone in class and watch the video together (and facetime). Have your mom or Dad make you watch it after dinner or something.

  3. Even if you don’t take or don’t do well on the AP test, having the background in Calc AB and BC will make college calc SO much easier. Future you will thank you.

@happy1 this teacher is the only precal/cal AB/cal BC teacher & this is the teaching style he uses for all 3

@Groundwork2022 will they still take the acceptance back if you were an automatic admit (top 10% of my class)

You should check the college web site or ask directly what you need to do if you change your schedule after applying. Often this means informing the college, which will include it in the admission decision, or may do another review of your application if you have already been admitted. Colleges do not like surprises on the final transcript.

Is the video really an hour long? I went to a workshop on the flipped classroom and what was recommended was a series of short videos 3 or 4 minutes long so you can watch some of them once and the hard content you can review more than once. Anyway, break up the video watching into smaller chunks and go to something else in between.
