Dropping Econ, Stats & English

I'm a junior and currently attending a school 20 minutes away (10 of them on freeway). The time (which adds up to 80 minutes a day for my mom, who has to provide transportation) and the gas prices are making the commute very inconvenient. Along with that I'm doing rather poorly in my AP Chem and AP Calc classes and I'm not really "connecting" with my teachers (at the moment, I can't see any of them putting together a recommendation for me.

I'm very heavily considering transferring to a closer school (5 minute walk). I've already talked it over with the admin, so I don't think it'll be much of a problem. It's a smaller school with similar SAT scores, state tests, etc, but it's missing AP Econ (Macro & Micro), Stats and English Language. So I'd have to give them up if I were to make the switch. But I'm not ruling out the possibility of self-studying Econ, at least.

Schedules

Current School
1. AP Econ
2. AP Calc BC
3. AP Chemistry
4. AP Stats
5. AP English
6. AP Gov't
7. Spanish 4
8. Free period

New School
1. AP Chemistry
2. Lab period
3. AP Calc BC
4. AP Gov't (1st sem)/Soc. st. elective (2nd sem)
5. English IIH
6. Spanish 4
7. Latin I (it didn't fit into my current schedule, but I have been self-studying so I think I could get into the class)
8. Possible peer tutoring/elective/self-study/other

As of mid-quarter, I'm averaging As in all classes, low B/high C in Calc and D in Chem

I think the fact that AP Chem is a double period (and it has no Chem prerequisite, so I can sort of re-learn stuff since I've already taken Chem honors) will help me keep pace better with the class. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a lot of variance between AP classes of different schools, so I probably won't have a lot of trouble playing catch-up.

What do you guys think? Should I just suck it up and try to do better where I am? Obviously, I need to get this sorted out as soon as possible, so any advice would be great.

Get out. Be happy. Don’t worry about your new schedule its still fantastic. have a good rest of high school.

Well I suppose we can’t get any more straight forward than that. Thanks!

I’m still a little nervous, though. I’m really interested in UChicago, and I’m afraid that not having Econ & Stats would damage my changes at majoring in that there. =/

at your new school youll still be taking a rigorous schedule so i wouldnt worry. switch schools now!

Oy. I just went to my guidance appointment at the new school. Current courses:

 2. Study hall

 4. AP Spanish
 5. AP Gov
 6. AP Chem
 7. Lab
 8. Study hall

Semester 2

 3. AP Calc
 4. AP Spanish
 5. World Issues
 6. AP Chem

 8. Writing & Composition

Am I getting royally screwed over here? They wouldn’t let me apply for any first semester classes I didn’t already have and English honors was full so my counselor put me in elective Englishes.

There’s also an option to take a few classes at the local university, but I can only sign up for the spring semester and those are ~$1000 each.

Help!

I think you’ll be fine on English, but the three periods of study hall in the first semester would worry me a bit. Are there no non-AP Stats or Econ classes at the new school?

No, my counselor wouldn’t let me take any classes that I wasn’t already enrolled it, so I couldn’t start any new courses.

I’m considering self-studying Econ & Stats, though, because I actually liked those classes. But that’s not the same as actually taking the course, is it? I hope this doesn’t reflect too negatively on me. And I think my teacher wants me to switch down to Pre-AP Spanish.

Ugh. Moving sucks.

Help? I’d really like some options about getting an English class back.

And I have permission to do self-study for Stats & Econ; does that bolster my resume at all?

“so my counselor put me in elective Englishes.”
So what are the Elective Englishes? You posted 3 study halls and no English classes. As long as you ARE taking English classes this year, and can take AP English next year, you are fine, but you should ask you counselor if he would make a note in your file to mention in his letter of recommendation to colleges that you had to drop AP English because you changed schools and the subsequent scheduling/class size issue at your new school.

Electives are Science Fiction and Writing & Composition. They’re alternatives for people that don’t want/can’t handle honors level, or extra enrichment for those that are already in honors level. I have them both under second semester, because I wasn’t allowed to start new classes this semester.
