Hi, I'm applying for regular decision and I wanted to let you know that I'm taking regular economics this semester instead of AP. I decided not to take AP because the class is very time consuming and I didn't want my grades in other classes to suffer. I'm so sorry I didn't let you know sooner. I finished the common app in October, when I was still planning on taking AP, and I just realized that I forgot to make the change when I was looking over it recently. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

is that okay? also is anything grammatically wrong or should I capitalize Economics?

I don't want them to think I'm lazy or too stupid to take AP, I just switched because the regular classes were so full there wouldn't be a chance for me to switch in later, so I didn't want to risk it. I knew I'd be okay in regular and wasn't sure about AP, so I didn't want to HAVE to stay in it, and also I'm not as interested in economics as my other AP classes, so I didn't want it to detract from the time I spent on those classes. I REALLY want to get into these schools (which are mostly match/reaches for me) so I don't want this to mess it up...please help!

You don’t have to apologize for anything. You are allowed to change your schedule if you want to and you don’t have to give an explanation. Just let them know that you are replace AP Econ with regular Econ in your schedule for this semester. No explanation is required, but if you want to give one, just say that this change will enable you to better balance your commitments. One AP class more or less isn’t a big deal. They are so inundated with paperwork right now that I suspect they won’t even notice.

Since the AP course is very time consuming, I decided to take the regular class so that I could better balance my commitments and I didn’t want my other grades to suffer.

how about this? how much do colleges care about this stuff? I just want them to know that I didn’t want to take more APs this semester than last semester b/c I’m so used to the workload I have now and I don’t want second semester to be too stressful. But I want to get in!! ahh well anyway is this version better/okay? I just want to send this and get it over with haha

I think the letter that you have proposed will work against you. AP classes are supposed to be the equivalent of freshman level introductory courses. In effect you’re telling the colleges “I will have trouble taking a workload of those classes.” This may not be the message you want to convey since you’re applying to do that very thing this fall.

I suggest keeping it neutral. Just something to the effect that when you filled out the common app you had listed AP Econ but as it turns out you’re actually taking the regular course.
