My son is in math 100 he took Algebra 1 and 2, geometry and AP statistics in high school. He didnt place well on the math placement exam during Bama Bound. This doesnt surprise me because he is a slow worker and it was a timed test. So, he is taking math 100 right now.
He said that he is actually enjoying the review. Also, you only have to go to the computer lab on certain days if you score below a 75 percent on the test. He thinks that would be very rare for him.

It sounds like it is pretty much a review course. The lessons are laid out where they take you through them step by step and you can repeat them from what I understand. I would say dont drop the class because you have to pass it to move on and students in majors that dont require math have to pass math 110 next. If you need math for your major the next step is math 112.

They are going to have to pass this class with a C or better to move on so have them get the help they need. I can give you my sons phone number if you PM me. He is finding this class quite easy, but Im sure he wouldnt mind helping another student who is struggling. Or have them go to the tutoring that was already mentioned but dont drop!!

Yes, it is a review course for those who don’t score as well on the math placement exam.

I didn’t mean to suggest that the class if for those who didn’t take Alg II, since Alg II is req’d for admittance.

For anyone struggling…This isn’t the time to drop since you’d get a W anyway. You might as well try til at least mid October and go to many tutoring sessions in the meantime.

If I remember correctly, the beginning of Alg II is confusing for some students, so it doesn’t surprise me that some kids would be struggling at this point.

So…Get help! The tutoring is FREE!!! The college pays the tutors. take advantage of this! CTL has tutoring for many subjects…my boys tutor math, bio, chem, spanish, philosophy, and English. Other students tutor other subjects.

Oh ok, that sounds better. When someone said the intro math classes were online, I was thinking calc 1 was intro. Should be fine for S then, methinks he will need some help getting through calc 1, but that should be the only math he will need to take.

I think 113 and 115 are traditional lectures and not computer-based, but you still have required homework and quizzes that are computer-based. Your tests must be taken at the MTLC, if I’m reading the syllabus correctly. 100, 110, 112, and 121 are computer-based.

Mom2K, MA-112 is definitely a college level math class as credit for that class counts towards satisfying the core curriculum requirement.

A business major must take & pass MA-112 & MA-121 at minimum. Both of those I believe are done primarily in the math lab, but students do meet one day a week in a traditional classroom for instruction.

Math115 is an traditional math class; my D is taking it now. Homework does have to be done online (D does say that is a little cumbersome for her as she likes to work problems out on paper; she’s been doing that and then entering it online) and you do have to take the tests online at the math center in Tutwiler (she did that for the first time yesterday.) This will be the only math class she HAS to take at UA (she’s a history major) but she may take Calc I next semester just to be ready for any grad school requirements.
