drowning in tears

I actually wrote an editorial about the usefulness of the SAT in college admissions for my school paper.

I said that the truly dedicated will score higher, and the colleges know it doesn't test intelligence. If you scored high, the colleges will know that you deserved your score and you got out what you put in.

No, because how many tmes do you actually believe people who say "relax?" I know I don't! In my mind, I think "Oh, you ****ers don't even know what you're talking about!" Empathy + good advice is a good combination.

Everyone is entitled to a point of view, however the point isnt to say 'relax', it is to explain how to go about 'relaxing', and personally, I believe that telling someone that you are stressed out doesn't alleviate any of their tensions.

that's it. I should change "drowning" to "drowned" on this post. I'm sorry about complaining to all of you. In response to the tutor people, I did have a tutor for a while, and my parents spent tons of money on him, when they can't even really afford it. It actually helped on the practice tests, I think... in the last few week I was scoring in the mid 2100's on all my practice tests, wich I would have been happy with.

But then today happened. I thought I was doing everything fine, came into the room totally relaxed and with 9 hours of sleep behind me, started doing the test... essay went great (11 or 12, I'm sure), first section was amazing, and then on one section of the verbal (which I actually scored a 710 on LAST time), I just freaked. for no reason. I was slightly short on time, and suddenly started telling myself that I wouldn't have enough. so then I didn't, because I was freaking for 15 minutes. I filled in... about 15/24 questions... I was just staring at the space in front of me the whole time, scared witless.

cancelled right there at 10:30. came home and blubbered for about 3 hours.

I'm done crying, complaining, whining, okay? I'm done. I've accepted the fact that I only have december left so I can't take both SAT IIs and SAT I's over, so none of my favorite schools will accept me. I'm done caring, I guess. I have no more strength to study or to take this anymore. just forget about me, all right? I'm sorry I ever signed up for this ridiculous website.

wow you are a loser.

Empathy doesn't mean to tell someone you're upset too. Its to let them know that you know how they feel. Then help them. That's what I did. Just saying "relax" will **** 'em off.

They won't NOT accept you because you don't have the best SAT scores. There are many other factors that go into it! Did you not know that?

Anyway, this is just another case that supports my theory that you simply can't master the SAT unless you're born with it. It has to test your intelligence at least some what (in contrary to what some others said).

$40 down the drain. OMG

why am I a loser? because I get nervous? don't be a jerk, I'M UPSET ENOUGH AS IT IS.

quitejaded, plenty of people can master the SAT. I know a girl who had 590s the first few tests she took, and then she studied at got like.. mid 700s. another girl I know went from mid 600s in everything to a 2130 after taking the kaplan class. it's extremely coachable to anyone who has the $$$$$.

as for me, I went down 60 points from my PSAT (2130).. bleh.

you are a loser because you come on a message board and complain about how horrible your situation is, when, in reality, it is trivial. Reacting in this manner makes it seem like your SAT score is your life, which if it is, is incredibly sad. In the long run, we dont know you and do not care about how well you do. You are just a part of the regular folk.

ryan -- stop being so mean, my god. Try to have a little sympathy and compassion.

mehh -- are u saying u didn't finish the test or finished it but felt you did poorly..or actually cancelled your scores? .. I'm curious what happened

by the way...i totally f'd up math 2 C toda Y bah!

quitejaded:SAT is coachable and if u can't over test anxiety than u will have it for all tests u take. If u r "freeze" on the SAT do u think u'll do any better on the GRE or even the AP test? IQ test u might relax b/c it doesn't affect ur admissions. Anyways if u can't cope with test anxiety then that is ur fault. It's been 16-17 freakin years and if u can't even control ur anxiety level and concentration then what can i say.

I can curb my anxiety SOMETIMES (ie, when I feel like I'm going to do REALLY well), but if I feel like I'm making a mistake or two, I start freaking and then just FREEZE and stop working... the problem is probably my expectations of perfect scores and the frightening realization that it's probably not going to happen. oh well. better start workin' on my essays/givin' teachers recs/keeping up my grades this quarter, take the SAT I again in december, try to take the SAT IIs in january (schools will hate me for it, but at least I have 2 right now... and they don't matter quite as much, right?), and just do my very best without freaking out.

PS: if I took a year off to work/retake tests to apply to better schools, would that give me a better or worse chance? I would definitely do stuff besides SATs. Or would I automatically do worse on the SATs if I weren't in school? what do you think?

Mehhhh- (nice name, by the way!)
You could still have all the required scores if you take the SAT IIs and the ACT. They don't fall on the same weekend in December, and you could probably still register with a late fee. As one of the posters mentioned, there's a greater correlation on the ACT between GPA and score, so you might do better. Also, there's a science portion, which would probably help you.

Good luck!

mehh .. what did u get on the sat ?

willow, aren't the SATs a lot more important than SAT IIs? If I have 2 SATs (even if one is a 650 BLEHHHH), shouldn't I still try a lot harder on the SAT Is? Most people I know don't even take ACTs... and all the schools I'm applying to are northeastern, sooo.... I dunno, all my friends get like 2200s on their SATs or at least 2100s+++, so I think I ought to AT LEAST break 2100.

Kingsfan, I got so freaked in the middle of the test I cancelled it before finishing, during a break or something, and then just left. I was so upset that they just let me go home and calm down.
And to your other question: 2070 first time I took it (710 cr, 670 math, 690 w)
4 on the AP history test, 650 SAT II spanish, 730 us history.

Maybe I should go on some anti-anxiety medication, I don't know.

2070's a good score. You don't really need to improve all that much.

Yes, the SAT I is probably more important than the IIs, but if you need both to get in, you might want to look at the ACT if you don't have time to take both. Where are you applying? Most schools accept both.

If you took the last test without anxiety problems, I don't think you should worry about it too much. Worry begets worry. Just reschedule, if you think you need to, and remind yourself that the test is in no way a reflection of or on who you are. All it does is measure ability, not necessarily intelligence, to perform a specific set of skills. Though it seems important now, in the long run your life will be determined by much more than 30 points on the SAT.

well, I am applying to cornell RD (too late for ED because I didn't take the tests soon enough), Johns Hopkins RD, Tufs (I'm almost 100% sure it's going to be ED II because I'm scared of not getting in anywhere, so I want to at least have this contract which could help me), Carnegie Mellon, NYU, wellesley, BU, Brandeis... like them in that order, to be honest, but Tufts is the only thing that has EDII, sooo....

plus, my ecs are fairly average for people that apply to those schools:
a couple of clubs (4 years w/ leadership), possibly will join another this year that I started in 10th grade, 100+ hours of community service, honors summer college course at tufts, summer accelerated drama class... that's about it. pretty average for those schools, really. therefore, the need to do better on SATs to make me stand out more.

You do know that if Tufts accepts you, you have to go, right? Even if you get into another school?

Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Wellesley, BU (is that Boston University?) and Brandeis all accept the ACT. Your SAT I scores are in the median range for many of the colleges, as well. I don't think you need to worry a lot.

Good luck, whatever you choose to do! :)

you are a loser because you come on a message board and complain about how horrible your situation is, when, in reality, it is trivial.
definitely agree, if u give up on the sat then ul probably give up on life. sorry.
