I feel really stupid

So im going into my sophomore year and decided im going to take the SATs this year, probably in May. Wanting an early start, I came up with a study plan that I plan on sticking too.

So today i took my first ever practice test...so I could start up my study plan and see where I need improvement. I thought I would get maybe in the 1800 area. LOL jokes on me. I ended up getting a 1250.....!

CR: 450
Math: 350
Writing: 450

Yikes. This really made me feel stupid. Yes, i know it's my first ever practice test but I just feel completely defeated. I had high hopes to get 2200+, but coming from a 1250...it just seems far fetched. I want to go to an ivy league, I'm taking 5 ap courses this year, and i was really excited for all of it. Now i just feel stupid lol.

Does anyone have any advise they could give me? Sorry if you found my depressing ranting annoying.

You are only a sophomore! Good that you are getting an early start, but you haven’t (most likely) learned all the math you need for this yet. To do better on the reading section, make sure you read a lot, which you will probably have to do for all of your AP classes. Anyway, do not freak out. You will grow a lot academically this coming year. It will not seem that way when the year is up, but you will improve greatly in writing and math. The standardized test will come much easier at the end of the year and through you Junior year, especially if you keep taking practice tests. Just keep practicing, focus on school and you will be okay.

I remember trying to study for the SATs at the end of my freshmen year. It was awful. Now I know so much more (and you will too, I promise!). When you become a senior, you will laugh at how much easier the tests are. Good Luck!

Thank you for the reassurance Latin! Deeply appreciated !

That’s why it’s bad to start so early - it’s demoralizing. As a sophomore, you probably haven’t even finished Algebra II which is integral for the math section. Completing another math class or two will do wonders for your score. Freshmen English is still “baby writing”, you don’t get into “real” writing until AP English. My writing on the ACT in October of my junior year (the year I took AP Language) was absolutely pathetic - I expect a near perfect score this time around after completing AP English.

My advice - put the study books up until your junior year. You’ll improve a hell of lot more by focusing on your classes. Save the prep books until 4-6 weeks before your first test. Which imo shouldn’t be until the fall of your junior year at the earliest.

Alright thanks for all the great advise! I heard that you just needed up to geometry to do well in the math portion of the test, thats why i decided to take the test this year.
