drum set story?

Hello,
My son is quite interested in Oberlin. He's a very good rock and jazz drummer (aspires to do it for a living) but doesn't see himself as conservatory material. Nonetheless, he's attracted to the school because of the intensely musical culture. If he were to go to Oberlin, would he have ready access to a drum set, or a place to keep his own? I'm assuming that he'd have plenty of people to play with. . .

Thx,

Hm. That’s an awesome question-- I’ll try to find out the answer. Might be a different story after the new jazz studies building is finished.

As to the later: YES. There’s always a need for a drummer. Drummers get snatched up quickly for bands of all genres. He can also be a paid accompanist for the dance department, go on tour with OSTEEL, play with jazz ensembles… there’s a lot out there.

I would check out Will’s blog:
[Oberlin Blogs | Will Mason '10](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/Will.shtml)
"I’m currently pursuing degrees in Politics and in Contemporary Improvisation, an individual major of my own design.

Though I was originally a classical pianist, I decided to make drums my principal performance instrument midway through high school. My parents were not angry, just a little disappointed. At Oberlin, I study under jazz drumming legend Billy Hart, and spend a lot of my time composing and tinkering with samplers and live electronics."

Actually, you may just want to ask Will directly on his blog. He’d know better than me.

Laura’sDad, I sent you a PM
