D's Chances for College of Human Ecology

Well My daughters SAT scores are up to: CR- 710
M - 640
W - 700
Just got ACT score this AM it is a composite of 31

Class rank is now 8 of 170. average is 94.55 (weighted), 5 AP’s (all that are offerred)

Has added senior class president to her EC’s (on top of swim team captain, theatre program vice president)

…I think her stats put her in the ballpark, it will come down to recommendations & essays?

It might be quite important to be able to make a strong case for demonstrated fit with the school’s programs.

This was particuarly impressed upon me when we attended a Hum Ec info session. They went around the table and 5 out of the 7 (or so) prospective applicants there clearly fit with specific programs there, by virtue of their extracurricular experiences and interests, very impressively so. Unfortunately my son was one of the outliers, he’s interested in one area, conceptually, but has done nothing to follow up on that interest.

He’s not applying.

My daughter was accepted to HumEc and I would be pretty hard pressed to figure out which one of her ECs they would have considered to be a good fit.

I know her passion for what she wants to do and her essay definately went towards a good fit, but since she didn’t decide any of this until her junior year in HS, nothing she did EC-wise, as far as I can tell, would have shown a good fit.

She did have higher SATs (2130) and ACT (34) than the OP, but her class rank was more like 25 of 535 and something like 11 AP’s plus IB.

She’s intending to major in Human Development. My wife & I are both school psychologists which I hope has enabled her to get a close up perspective of different issues in the field of psychology, especially some which pertain to the professors in Human Ec areas of research. My hope is that although her EC’s don’t pertain to the intended major (which in our rural area would be difficult to find), her whole home enviorment has been more informative than any internship, etc. could give. In addition I think her recomendations will speak to her keen perception of interpersonal relationships and people in general.

Ask her to review courses for HumanDev and see if she can speak to that.

I know when my daughter wrote her essays, which I do very much think were the deciding factors on her admittance, she focused on the mission statement for the college.

HumEc and CALS have many similar majors, but they are very different in how they are focused.

have your D study what is on this page and make sure her essays show how she will fit.

Thanks for all the insight over the past year. My D was admitted ED. Even though her stats were a little low & her EC’s didn’t really match up with her intended major, I think her letters of Rec. & Essays got her in!!
