Official Human Ecology Thread

Application Questions, Thoughts, Majors...

Let’s make this the official Human Ecology thread

Can anyone list the majors in terms of difficulty from the easiest major to get in to the hardest?

@wowihatecalculus‌ What state are you applying from?

All the majors look for different things in an applicant, so if you are more qualified for say Human Development then Fiber Science and Apparel Design may be the hardest for you to get into. It all depends on your extracurriculars, interests, and academic achievement (ACT, GPA, SAT…).

@wowihatecalculus, I saw from another of your posts that you are interested in Policy Analysis and Management (PAM) and are an International. I don’t think you can play the “which major is easier to get in to” game with the other HumEc majors as they are very different from one another. But I suppose Global and Public Health Science might be another match for you if you have a PAM background. No idea which is “easier” to get into, though.

If you are interested in PAM, you should also check out the School of ILR.

My D is interested in HE because it is smaller and has a couple of majors she likes. Does anyone know if this gives a smaller feel to the campus by being a tight knit group of students? Do NY residents get any preferences on admission to the land grant colleges like HE or is it just a lower tuition rate?

@Aussiemom‌ what major is she looking at? Also I have read that there is an unofficial quota of NY residents but since so many apply the admissions rate just equals out.

@Aussiemom, there is a perception that being a NY resident when applying to the land grant colleges is a hook or advantage. Whether that is true or not is something that none of us will know. The fact that approximately 50% of those accepted are from NY seems to suggest it is a hook.

I’m not from NY but I am willing to take my chances.

She interested in either HBHS or the Human Development major. She liked the small size of this college and the research opportunities available at HE. We are not NY residents so I worried if there were any admission stats on it. Just curious, are NY residents typically admitted with the same high stats or are they more lenient? Do TAs teach a lot of the introductory courses?

@Aussiemom, It is believed that they are more lenient. Whether that is true or not is something that none of us will know.

Anyone applying PAM?

What did you guys write about in the essay?

@Kungpaoasian, which essay, the supplement?

@connect1234 the supplement

The supplement prompt is pretty straightforward, I just shared with them my background and my interests as they align with the program.

Are you guys getting close to the 650 word limit?

also applying for PAM ED

^^Yes, supplement and common app essays are both very close to 650 words.
