I posted same question on other threads but no answer. Maybe I will have luck here. Need advice. Thanks.

S is going to visit Middlebury on 4/18/10 after visiting Bowdoin. Is there the most economic way to do it? He is 17 and can not rent a car. Both are very good schools though.

How much time between visits? It would not be an easy highway drive in between these two schools … it’s backroads and cross-lots in northern New England.

If there was lots of time – like a day – it might be possible to go through Boston with some sort of public transportation. It might be possible to fly puddle jumpers.

But in my humble New England opinion … you may not be able to get there from here.

Have you checked with the schools to see if they offer some kind of transportation from nearby major cities? Not being able to rent a car really limits his options. You could always hire a limo/car service to drive him between schools, but I expect you would be looking at big bucks.

The least expensive option might be to send an adult on the trip who will be able to rent a car. Is he flying into one airport and out of another one or is it a round trip out of one airport.? The drive between the schools is only about 300 miles but there’s no direct route so it’s probably a 5 hour drive.

Logistically, this sounds a little tough to do on one’s own without a car. I know you can take a bus from Burlington VT airport to Middlebury, but once there you’d have to coordinate with the school or a hotel about his staying overnight and then perhaps catch a bus back to a more central location to take a bus to Colby. Really, it’s probably less logistically stressful to have someone over the age of 25 (and able to rent a car) go with him and make it a three day trip. We did the same thing last year - a visit to Midd and then off to Colgate. I can not even imagine how we would have done that trip without an adult to drive between the two schools.

At least I know what options I have. Most likely I have to go with him. Next few days there are more decision coming out. Maybe I can pack more schools visit for this trip.

There’s a bus service between the Bowdoin campus and Logan airport in Boston (also stops downtown). I’d look into that (info on Bowdoin website) and then maybe look for flights to Burlington. There’s also Amtrak from Portland Maine to Boston. There might even be flights from the Portland airport to Burlington. You can find out by searching on itasoftware dot com. You have to “log in as a guest” to search flights. It’ll give you every option with pricing, but you can’t buy tickets there. A great research tool.

You’ve probably figured out how you’ll get this done by now, but if not, I thought there might be a student “ride board” Bowdoin/Midd could get S’s contact info posted on. If a Bowdoin student was driving to Midd Fri. night or Sat., S could get a ride. Bowdoin tennis teams are playing at Midd Sat. 4/17, so maybe fans would be driving over . . . Driving definitely is the way to go.
