Dual Citizenship and Tuition for US and UK

Hello everyone, I am a high school student and life-long resident of the United States, but I currently have a dual citizenship for the United Kingdom as well. I was wondering, if I go to an English university, will my citizenship grant me domestic tuition, or is it based solely on residency?

Solely on residency.

Not needing a student visa would make your life a lot easier, though.

Yes, you need 3 years residency in either the UK or EU and there is lots of detailed case law on this, so you can’t move to the UK for primarily educational purposes (e.g. going to boarding school in the UK for A-levels if your parents live permanently abroad). However, you would save the (relatively minimal) cost of the visa and National Health Service supplement and you’d obviously be able to work in the UK during vacations (or term time) with no problem.

Other European countries may have different rules for overseas students, though it is unclear how Brexit will impact all of this.

There won’t be much (if anything) in the way of merit or need based scholarships available to you as an overseas student. Nevertheless, if you are doing a classroom based course, then a 3 year course in the UK would cost of order $130K-$140K, which for full pay students is half the price of a private US university (without merit/need based aid) and less than many flagship state universities. Lab science courses charge much higher fees.
