Hello, everyone! I have a question about college admissions and dual citizenships. Though I searched many of the threads, I have not come across a clear answer pertaining to whether or not dual citizenships are advantageous....so....do you think being a dual citizen of Nigeria is a "hook" (using the word losely) in college admissions? Thanks!

Applying as a Nigerian, i.e. an International, is probably a disadvantage in some respects. Only a few colleges offer financial aid to Internationals, and at the high end schools. (HYPSMC), you have to be among the very top students from that country to get admitted in the first place.

Now, if the hook is the dual citizenship itself, that is - being eligible for two different passports, IMO that doesn't amount to a whole lot unless it you can show in an essay how it tells something important about you.

Probably more important than dual citizenship would be being bicultural and/or biracial, which is not necessarily connected to citizenship. I've known some dual citizens who were every bit as American as me or even more so. Being bicultural may be something of a hook, especially if one of the cultures or races you arise from makes you a URM, which Nigerian just might do.

Applying as international is a clear disadvantage. If your dual citizenship means more to you then just having another passport in your drawer, you can write about it in your essay, it might provide a "diversity" hook.

Thank you for your responses! I did not mention that I have dual US and Nigerian citizenships. I actually was born in the US and have a Nigerian citizenship by birth only. So, I believe that means I will not have to apply as an international student...again, thanks!

" I actually was born in the US and have a Nigerian citizenship by birth only".. just curious, what does that mean? If you're born in the States, wouldn't you be a US citizen by birth?

perhaps I wasn't clear...yes, I am a US citizen by birth, but I am also a Nigerian citizen by birth because both of my parents are citizens. Although the citizenship rules for countries vary, under Nigerian law, I can become a citizen. Hope that clarifies any confusion...
