Dual Credit Concerns

Hey,

I’m taking two dual credit classes in my sophomore year. The classes give out two grades (one for my high school and one for the college itself). My HIGH SCHOOL GRADE for both is an A, but my COLLEGE GRADES are failing. How will this affect my GPA and how colleges see me when trying to get into a four-year university?

I’m confused - why are there two different grades for the same class vs the same grade listed on both your high school and college transcript… My daughter did full time dual enrollment for two years. Her grades on her high school transcript were identical to the grade on her college transcript. In terms of high school gpa your high school determines how it uses a college class in its high school gpa. Our high school counts most college courses as an AP class in terms of counting towards gpa.

When you apply to colleges you need to send them a copy of your college transcript directly from the college even if it is listed on your high school transcript. It is up to the college you apply to how they look at it. If they see an A for a grade in a college class on a high school transcript but a failing grade on the same class from a college transcript at very least they will question the validity of the high school grade I would think.

Are you ‘failing’ because the college class calculates the grade based on points earned so far out of the total points for the semester while the hs grade calculates based on points earned out of graded points?

For example, if you have two midterms worth 30% of the grade and a final worth 40% even with perfect scores you’d be ‘failing’ with 60% until you actually have the final graded in the college calculation while the hs calculation would be 100% throughout the semester.

How are the grades calculated differently?

I SOLVED MY ISSUE by asking my teachers today, thanks for the help

Wait a sec. For those who responded, maybe you can claify why the discrepancy.

I don’t know what the case is for the OP, but for my kids that did DE at their hs there were two systems listing grades. The college grade book/website for their class and the hs grade book/website.

The college website had all of the assignments/tests for the semester listed and as items were graded the percentage for the class would increase.

The hs grade book on the other hand was an entry system where scores were entered by instructors throughout the semester when graded.

On day one with no grades…
Midterm 1: 0/30
Midterm 2: 0/30
Final: 0/40
College grade book displays 0/100 (0%)

HS
no entries

After Midterm 1-
Midterm 1: 30/30
Midterm 2: 0/30
Final: 0/40
College grade book 30/100 (30%)

HS
Midterm 1: 30/30
30/30 (100%)

After Midterm 2-
Midterm 1: 30/30
Midterm 2: 30/30
Final: 0/40
College grade book 60/100 (60%)

HS
Midterm 1: 30/30
Midterm 2: 30/30
60/60 (100%)

After Final -
Midterm 1: 30/30
Midterm 2: 30/30
Final: 40/40
College grade book 100/100 (100%)

HS
Midterm 1: 30/30
Midterm 2: 30/30
Final: 40/40
100/100 (100%)

Same grades/assignments for both, but two different methods of calculating the same class during the semester.

Our high school has no method of calculating a college grade. That is all up to the college/professor which has nothing to to with the high school. The only thing our high school gets from the college courses which are all taken on a college campus is the final grade from the school that goes on the official college transcript. The college dual enrollment coordinator gives it to the high school dual enrollment coordinator. Our high school puts that grade on the high school transcript for gpa purposes.

The college grade is up to the college. One of the reasons our hs calculates a grade is that interim grades are needed to determine eligibility for extra curricular activities at the hs. Since each of the dual enrollment classes that are taught at the high school have an entire class needing these forms it is a courtesy to help the professor (and the hs office) avoid needing physical paperwork for determining eligibility. For the classes my kids took at the college campus they had to fill out a paper form (usually calculated an interim grade themselves based on graded scores), asked the professor to sign it, and turned it into the office to be processed. The course grade (which is what shows up on transcripts) is always the same.

My D had two different grades, taking a class at Pitt.

Her HS was based on labs, homework, etc., etc. - all the things HS grades typically include.

Her Pitt grade was based on 3 exams she took during the year and the final, weighted as it is for all the enrolled college students.

Only students who enrolled in the college program had to take the college’s exam. Fortunately, the teacher used Pitt’s exam for the class final, so she didn’t have to take two.

She got an A- from Pitt, which is on her Pitt transcript. Her HS doesn’t even have + and - grades. I think she ended up with a B, but 2 As and 2 Bs that went into her GPA.

ah ha - you guys are talking about college classes taken at high school. When I think of dual enrollment I automatically think of high school students taking college classes with college students on a college campus because that is all that is offered here.

Same! I was confused at first while reading this thread. My high school offers dual credit through our state universities–they are given online by the professors in that university, and there are other undergrads in those classes as well. Our grades are calculated by the university/professors themselves then we send our college transcript to our GC so they can put it in our HS transcript.

Glad OP figured it out though!
