Dual Enrollment vs. AP

So my (senior in HS) daughter has 3 AP classes this year which are also dual enrollment with the local community college.

The students who take these courses get an actual transcript from the community college (my older daughter did this as well as take a couple AP tests and got a few credits different ways). We didn’t pay dual enrollment for her on some (we should have I think in hindsight) but I think it is because she wasn’t sure where she was going (with lax recruiting).

The university that she is already accepted to has an equivalency table for this community college (and many others as well). All 3 courses are on the equivalency table and part of her planned curriculum.

Question - if she goes to THIS college since it is clear that this school takes the CC credits, there is no reason she needs to take the AP test as well correct?

Yes if she already has or will be getting college credit she does not need to take the AP test, just make sure she send her college transcipts showing the completed classes

Assuming that the transfer subject credit for the college course is the same as that which can be gotten from the AP score, there is no reason to do the AP test. (There may be some situations where the transfer subject credit differs between the college course and AP score.)

If she is not considering other schools (particularly out of state ones), she would be fine as she will get those DE credits transferred.

Does your school have a policy about taking AP tests- many do, mine does. Kids are required to take the test- or they forfeit the weighted grade

And our district used unweighted grades, taking AP exams is student choice and paid for by the student. Many colleges only use unewighted gpa’s as well (recalculate their own version of a gpa- “academic” only classes perhaps). One can get a 5 on an AP test while not doing as well in class (like son who did not always do the work senior year). If the student is not getting an A perhaps s/he should take the AP exam if a 5 is a realistic possibility.

AP tests are basically a resume builder now. If she got accepted already, I see no reason to take the AP tests.

I work at a community college and that’s exactly what my son is doing. In lieu of taking APUSH he took the class where I work and he’s done.

Agree that it really makes no sense to take the AP testing if likely to attend this college. The only reason to take the exams would be for credit at schools who do not accept Duel Enrollment credits. Interesting question as my D has this problem backward. She took the freshman comp 101 DE class the sumester before she was DE eligible. She’s now thinking of taking the AP test to try and get credit. So this can play both ways.

@toowonderful no such policy

Be careful…some colleges will only accept dual enrollment classes if they were taught on the college’s campus and were not limited to high school kids (i.e. had some actual college students in them).

My experience is the same as moooop’s above. Not all schools are willing to take all DE credit. My DD regrets not taking the AP exam for a DE class she was in as the credit did NOT transfer to where she eventually ended up. A 4 on the AP exam would have got her out of the class. (On the plus side, it’s a pretty easy “A” for her as they’re even using the same textbook that she used in her DE class.)
