My son saw CMU over the summer and loved it. He's interested in majoring in math and music performance. How difficult is it to double major? And if he did not major in music are there still music opportunities available for a non-major?

CMU encourages dabbling in other fields and even requires it with the way it structures the different classes that students have to take. I think it would not be hard at all to double major and yes there are lots of music opportunities as my floormate is taking vocal lessons and he's an ECE major.

he should look into the BSA program.

It might be a bit of work, but it's certainly possible. One of my good friends dual-degreed in Materials Science & Engineering and music performance (on french horn). He really enjoyed both degrees, and since it took him an extra semester to finish, he spent the spring and better part of the summer studying french horn under a some really good dude in Europe. Now he's back in the US working for his PhD in Materials.
