Hi! I am going to major in Chemical Engineering, but at my school, I found out that I could dual major in chemistry also. What would be the benefit of this in the job market? Is it worth it?
I would say you should pursue it only if you have a strong interest in chemistry. If you want to focus your career on chemical reaction engineering, an additional major in chemistry is certainly advantageous. For general process engineering, it’s less important – the chemistry knowledge that comes from a ChemE degree essentially covers everything you need, and the chemistry major won’t make you much more competitive. Anything requiring serious chemistry knowledge will probably want a PhD.
Take this all with a grain of salt, I’m not a professional engineer.
