Is civil engineering a popular major at Duke? I heard that over 50% of Pratt is BME students. Do you think I have slight advantage since I applied to Pratt ED for civil engineering since the schools is not very known for that major? I know they take your intended major into consideration even though you can always switch.

To answer your question, statistically, no, it’s not a popular major, but it’s the right major for you if you have an interest in the subject areas covered by the curriculum. I tend to refrain from having individuals consider “popular” majors because, in the end, that term is pretty much meaningless. It is true that Duke has a famous BME program. I’m not sure exactly the degree to which it dominates the department, but they honestly aren’t really related fields so your interests will generally strongly lean in one direction. i.e. biomaterials and structural design are two very different animals. It is very hard to tell what type of advantage you would have, if any, without any information on your credentials, but on a purely level playing field, considering distributions of Pratt students, I would say minimal to none.
