Duke ED / second thoughts?

Son is a good (though hardly slam dunk) candidate for ED admission, with good grades, scores, extracurrics, etc. He was impressed by Duke from the git-go and spent a lot of time considering ED -- visited campus twice, he spent an evening there, etc. He was really inspired by the beauty of the place, saw the kids having such a good time, and appreciates the academic reputation. It was an easy choice for him to apply ED.

Except...

Now he's having some second thoughts. Wondering if he might be more comfortable at a LAC, wondering if he'll regret giving up the opportunity to participate in D-3 sports (he's a good athlete, but not an ACC athlete). Still def likes Duke, but thinking maybe he shouldn't have applied ED. Duke's probably #1 on his list, but not definitely #1 and he's wishing he kept some options open.

So...

Is it possible to change an ED application to an RD application, or is that just suicide? Is it possible to withdraw an ED application at all, for that matter?

Yes you can:

"Changing Your Mind: We understand that you might change your mind about a number of things during the application process, and we ask that you submit all application changes in writing. For example:

If you would like to change from one decision plan to the other, you should send a letter to our office no later than November 15.
If you’d like to change your course of study - in other words, to change your application from Trinity College of Arts and Sciences to the Pratt School of Engineering, or vice versa - you should send a letter to our office by November 15 if you apply Early Decision and March 1 if you apply Regular Decision.
If you have been admitted to another school under its binding early decision plan or you would like to withdraw your application to Duke for any reason, we ask that you send us your written request as soon as possible.
If your citizenship status changes at any time, we’ll be glad to update the information in our files if you will send us a copy of your “green card,” which you can fax to us at 919/684-8128.
If you didn’t apply for financial aid when you submitted your application, but would like to apply for financial aid, and you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you can contact the Financial Aid Office for information. If you are an international student, you may only apply for financial aid when you apply for admission to Duke.
If there are any other changes to your application, please send us the updated information in writing as soon as possible."
