Hi, I was accepted Early Decision, and I have a few questions for current students or anyone else who knows a bit about the Duke Engage programs.

How competitive are they? I heard that the international programs are incredibly competitive and most people do not even make the program of their choice.

Also, are there any programs that would suit pre-meds well? Specifically, programs that can provide clinical experience for those with an interest in med?

Hi! I’m a current freshman at Duke.
Duke Engage is pretty competitive, but if you personally know the professor in charge of the location or if you write a killer application, you definitely have a shot. Several of my friends made it in their first choice, and apparently even if you don’t get in the first time you apply, your chances increase when you apply later on.

Pre-meds have lots of opportunities–I would recommend that you sign up for the Bio majors listserve (if you’re a bio major), since we get regular emails about opportunities for clinical shadowing experiences. Further, you should really try to get into the Duke Hospital volunteering programs for undergraduates (interviews get taken up REALLY quickly). I’m currently in the process of applying for internships as well, and many professors have e-mailed me back already!

Good luck and congratulations on your admission! :)
