Can any Duke financial aid recievers share their experiences here?

What do you mean by "experiences"? They mail you a financial aid award letter, and you decide whether you want to go or not.

keep in mind that someone elses experience is not necessarily going to be your experience becasue there are so many variables in the FA process.

i wanna apply Duke ED but financial aid is stoppin me from doing so
my parents together make 18000 dollars and I have sibling that will soon attend college.....should i take the risk and apply DUKE Early Decision?

can anyone give me an example of how much Duke can offer me?
my parents make 18000 dollars a year, have no assets and I have sibling that will soon attend college....Duke says that they meet 100% demonstrated need through grants, scholarships and loans..so should I apply ED and take the chance?

bump plz........

if it says so, then go ahead.

If you're worried about money, I wouldn't apply for ED. Just go RD which will let you compare financial aid offers from other schools as well.

I know of one close friend's experience with Duke. His step-son did the Duke summer program for high school kids with high SAT scores. Kid fell in love with Duke that summer, and never considered attending anywhere else. Applied and got in ED. Had phenomenal stats and was a really outstanding kid. Would have been a free ride at lots of good schools. Did not get a penny in financial aid from Duke.

But, in Duke's defense, the story was that Mom did not want to ask ex for financial info or involve him at all, so that nixed applying for need based aid. So my friend the step-dad got to pay full freight for step-son to keep Mom happy. Still it seems Duke could have coughed up some merit cash, but with an ED admission, it didn't have to.

but given my REALLY bad financial state..do u think Duke would cut me some slack etc...?

$18000
no assets
almost no bank balance
2 parents and 1 sibling that will soon attend college...

NO CHANCE FOR A FULL RIDE?

you will not get a full ride because your aid package will have loans, work study and a student EFC from summer earnings.

insecure101

If you do some research (or listen to some of the posters here) you will realize that having a very low EFC does NOT mean that you will get a full ride. We have a low EFC and are estimating that we will still have to pay $8K - $13K per year in loans, work study and summer earnings.

I would not apply ED if finances are a concern.

This completely sucks

If you're good enough to get into Duke, you probably have a chance at scholarships and with low income, try for scholarships there too. And don't forget to apply to some financial safeties and schools with good chances for merit money.

yea i think i'll get in and hopefully some small scholarships too
