I know that Duke has a 100% demonstrated need program
But, are they really as nice and geneours as they are on paper?

can dukies give me some insight?
I am really debating if I should apply early decision..........
can i rely on the 100% demonstrated need and go ahead and apply early?

I know of two people who have applied and were accepted ED (one from Class of 2008, other from 2009), both relying on a decent financial aid package in order to attend Duke. Both are from families with a very limited income, and yes, Duke offered both a full package.

Just be aware that demonstrated need in your eyes and in Duke's eyes may be two different things altogether. We honestly thought that our daughter would qualify for some aid and filled out all the necessary paperwork expecting at least a small amount of money. She did not receive a dime! According to their calculations and the discussions that my husband had with the financial aid office, we are one of those families that "falls through the cracks," just barely missing the cut off for some aid. Hopefully, when our second one goes to college, that will all change!

Although ED is binding, Duke will let you off the hook if you feel that you simply cannot afford to attend.

I would say to go ahead and apply ED simply because it is the easiest way to get accepted. Then, worry about the financial side of things.

yeah, the fin aid formula they use is complicated, so ur idea of need != their idea of need. Assets and such are just as heavily weighted as income from work and such, so there are plenty of ways where ur fin aid package can be drawn downward.

well im not sure about everyone else, but i was VERY satisfied with my financial aid package. because of the financial aid/grant money, duke was a cheaper option for me than the two public universities i applied to (uva and william and mary)

i am not entirely happy, but i dont think i have much room for an argument. income last year was around 80k, and my EFC from duke is 27k because of the assets my parents have accrued...

I got a pretty good deal on my financial aid. Since my bro and I are goin to Duke at the same time, they cut us a pretty good deal.. IMO Duke is very generous.

I guess its really on a case by case basis cuz everyone's situation is different.

about how much aid can i expect with income of 80k but no assests?

look on JHU's undergrad admissions website. they have a financial aid calculator u can use which gives a pretty decent estimate of your duke package, the duke package was actually a little less than what JHU predicted.
